Belichick traded the 193rd pick in the draft to the Eagles for the 194th. That’s it. Straight up.

“A salary-cap move!” Philly coach Andy Reid joked on Saturday night. The truth is, Reid and Belichick had made a deal with each other for 10 straight years (not restricted to the draft), and here it was, the sixth round, and they hadn’t made one yet. So they got on the phone and Reid said, “Listen, our streak is in trouble.” Here came the no-harm, no-foul deal. Both took linebackers whom the other team wouldn’t have picked—Philly drafted Ohio State’s Brian Rolle, and New England picked Markell Carter from Central Arkansas. Who said Reid and Belichick are always serious?

New England Patriots Lee Smith Highlights

From Mike Reiss:

How might you envision him making his mark in the NFL?: "I don’t know if I’ve seen another player as physical as him at the tight end position. From what I understand, it’s hard to find guys like Lee that enjoy blocking. His mentality is that he’s going to do whatever is best for the team. He will not complain. I know in college, a lot of tight ends just want to catch the ball. He’s not like that. He’ll do whatever. If they want to line him up and have him block every play, that’s what he’ll do.“

Patriots All-Access Alert!

Patriots All-Access Alert!

The ultimate must watch Patriots All-Access, the draft edition. Great behind the scenes stuff, including my favorite guy, Ernie Adams. Mike Reiss points out:

Bill Belichick’s longtime friend going back to their days at Phillips Andover Academy, Ernie Adams, is the team’s football research director. When trades were discussed, Adams was seen writing them on the board as a key person in the draft room. Even in just a few minutes of draft footage, it’s easy to see how much Belichick trusts and values Adams’ opinion. It was Adams, after a deal couldn’t be struck for the No. 33 pick, who looked at Belichick and said “Let’s pick him” in reference to cornerback Ras-I Dowling.

Mayne Street: Wes Welker makes a deal with the devil.

Thanks to Patriots fan @AliWeitz for tweeting this to me. I’m ashamed to admit it’s a mainstream Patriots video that I somehow missed! Unacceptable.

Rex Ryan on the three games of 2010 vs. the Patriots

It was a little hard to watch this at first, but I bit the bullet and I’m glad I did. As a Patriots fan you might not like Rex Ryan but you certainly have to respect the coaching performance he had in getting his team to rebound from the 45-3 blowout to beat the Pats in the playoffs. I know BB does.

There’s no question that they were absolutely the better team on that day in January. Of course if Crumpler doesn’t drop that TD it could’ve been a very different game. But them’s the bounces, and I know the Patriots will bounce back, especially with such a young defense that will still have a lot to prove in 2011.

Love him or hate him, Rexy makes the Pats-Jets rivalry a million times more fun, and at the end of the day that’s what football is all about.

I do think there is still interest in [Mat Light] coming back if the sides can reach an agreement. I’d lean toward it not happening, with Light landing in Kansas City. Makes too much sense to me.

Mike Reiss

Interesting. I’ve been of the opinion that Light would be back for a year or two, giving Solder some time. Definitely something we’ll ask Reiss about this weekend on the podcast.

Frenz:Why the New England Patriots Passed on a Pass Rusher

Frenz:Why the New England Patriots Passed on a Pass Rusher

Great stuff here from my podcast mate Erik Frenz. Here’s a nice excerpt…

[In 2010],  the Patriots not only got more sacks [than 2009], but they came from a wider group of players. It’s hard to believe the Patriots pass rush improved between 2009 and 2010, but they made strides toward the defense they want to run.

Why would spreading them out be better? It’s easier to neutralize the pass rush if all the production is coming from one player. Simply lock onto that “pass rush specialist” and boom, tough actin’ Tinactin…or something.

(no title)

While I wrote last week that the Patriots should let Brandon Lloyd, among others, walk this offseason, it wasn’t because of production. For his salary, his play was fine. My point was that if the Patriots determine they need better at that X receiver position and spend a lot of money to do it, it […]
