MeatlockerSports.com: James Sanders the prototypical Patriot

Some interesting stuff in this article from James Sanders who we don’t often hear much from. Which pretty much confirms he’s the prototypical Patriot. It will be a big year for Sanders, as both he and Brandon Meriweather enter the last years of their contracts.

“Personally for me, I just want to improve my game each year. I know a lot of guys say it, but I just want to learn to become the best player that I can possibly be. I feel like I haven’t reached my full potential. I feel like I’m still learning more and more after each season. I just want to continue to grow in all facets of my game, run defense, pass defense, special teams… everything. I want to continue to strive to be a better player every year and I feel up to this point that I’ve been improving each year and I just aim to continue to do so. As a team, obviously the goal is to win a super bowl. I’ve come close a couple of times, but I haven’t had the opportunity to hold that trophy and get that championship ring and that’s something I still strive to earn.”

Sanders’ interception against the Colts to seal the win has to be a major career highlight for him.

“I’m dealing with the best offensive line and best quarterback in the NFL, so the holes are going to be there. I think we’re going to have an awesome backfield,” he said. “I bring a downhill running style. I’m no blazer at all. I’m the back that can go in there for four or five yards a carry. I know my role.

"What you are going to get with me is a dedicated player, an unselfish player and a player who’s willing to do whatever it takes to win. That’s my attitude. I think my production is best between the tackles. Now I have to see how Coach [Bill] Belichick wants to use me.”

Football Outsiders: Biggest Patriots post-draft hole

May 12, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Here’s what the Football Outsiders guys had to say about the Pats post-draft.:

Biggest Post-Draft Hole: Defensive End, Outside Linebacker

No team in recent memory has done as good a job of perpetuating their talent-purchasing power as New England, who ensured they would be major players in the 2012 Draft by acquiring extra first- and second-round selections. But when the Patriots opted to use their first-round pick to protect Tom Brady – never a bad idea, mind you – they passed up an opportunity to add a sorely needed playmaker to the front seven.

Colorado offensive tackle Nate Solder supplies insurance against losing Matt Light in free agency and should provide a bookend for Sebastian Vollmer, but the Patriots took Solder with Cal defensive end Cameron Jordan still on the board. Jordan’s scouting report reads like a young Richard Seymour, and he stood out as the only five-technique prospect who doubled as a legitimate pass-rushing threat in the draft.

Bill Belichick also showed scant interest in the 3-4 outside linebacker group, preferring to use his second- and third-round picks to shore up the secondary and add depth at running back. There are some pass-rushing free agents out there, including Jason Babin and Mathias Kiwanuka, and it is certainly possible that New England will make a push for a big-dollar veteran edge rusher.

Walter Football: Patriots #4 in power rankings

May 11, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Here’s the latest from Walter Football, with the Colts, Steelers and Packers ranked ahead of the Pats…

4. New England Patriots (14-2) – Previously: 2.
MAY 11 UPDATE: What the hell happened during the draft? It’s almost like Bill Belichick logged into Bodog and bet his entire bank account on “Will New England address its front seven in the first five rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft? No +1,500.”

MARCH 16 UPDATE: When I was buying a house, my friend and real estate lawyer asked me if I planned on getting married anytime soon. When I told him no, he replied, “Good. Don’t get married.”

I didn’t understand why he said this until I saw Tom Brady’s pony tail. Poor Tom. I think we now know who wears the pants in that household.

As for the actual team, I’m concerned about Brady’s offensive line. Stephen Neal just retired and Matt Light is a free agent. Bill Belichick needs to make sure that he protects the pony tail at all cost.

Anyone else find it ironic that on March 16 they’re saying the Pats should protect Tom Brady at all costs, then they take the left tackle of the future at 17, and now Walter cant’ figure out what the hell happened because they should’ve addressed the defensive front seven? Whaaaat?

I feel good enough where I could contend, even though I’m not that high profile of a guy, for a comeback player of the year [award],” he says. “I think I can have that type of season. When I’m healthy, I feel like there’s nobody better than me at ‘5’ technique [left defensive end]. I feel that good, and to return back to that form, that’s where I feel right now.

I was taught, by Bill Belichick, at a very early age that scouting begins on Sunday. You need to know your football team. The only way you get to know your football team is you’ve got to be able to watch them at practice, I watch the practice tape, so that’s why I do that.

How do you see the chandler signing effecting wright and who do you see winning the 4th wide receiver spot: tymes or dobson

There is a bit of overlap between Chandler and Wright but not enough to really put them directly into competition. Chandler’s still closer to a “Y” tight end while Wright is more a fit for the “F” tight end spot, ala Hernandez. They can definitely co-exist and I certainly thing there’s a place for a Gronk/Chandler/Wright package […]
