Frenz: Ten undrafted free agents the New England Patriots must target

Hoodie bless Frenz for putting this together, I don’t do much rookie free agent pondering so it’s nice to get an idea of some prospects who slipped through the cracks. Craig Marshall is one guy in particular I think is an interesting pass rusher type.

Fox/Caplan: New England Patriots Offseason Review

Fox/Caplan: New England Patriots Offseason Review

Eh, not much you didn’t already know here,  it’s yet another broad view of the Pats from a national writer who won’t tell you things like despite only having one sack Cunningham was solid in both the run and pass game, and it was his pressure that forced Peyton Manning into that game sealing interception.

As always any kind of potential improvement of young teams is always counted secondary to the personnel additions. The Patriots have assembled one of the youngest defenses in the NFL, and under the great coaching they receive you can never discount the impact of improvement.

As for the “Pats will only go as far as the defense takes them, and can no longer rely on Tom Brady like they used to” I heartily disagree. The Patriots were never just about Tom Brady. They were about a great veteran defense, and a clutch offense and special teams that came through when they needed to. The moment the Pats became too reliant on Tom Brady (2006) they stopped winning Super Bowls.

So in one respect yes, it is all about the defense now. It’s about getting it back to a level where it can perform on the biggest of stages and make plays when it’s all on the line. When they start doing that Brady and the offense will be ready to do their part.

Football Outsiders: Patriots 3rd greatest deviation in draft report cards

May 13, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Football Outsiders looked at the draft report cards of 11 draft writers and analysts and compiled composite scores for each NFL team. Here’s how the Pats did:

New England Patriots

GPA: 2.76 (17th overall)
Standard Deviation: 0.955
Highest Grade: A+ (Brown)
Lowest Grade: D (Caplan)
Comments: Acquiring first- and second-round picks in 2012 was enough for Brown to overlook New England passing on its most pressing need in this year’s draft. Caplan (D) and Byrne (C-) were less forgiving.

The Patriots had the third highest deviation between their collective scores which shouldn’t be all that surprising. Just consider that line between people who think you should draft your needs in order of your picks, and people who think you should take the best player available at slot regardless of need.

Pats Posits: Regrouping on the Free Agency Front

The initial rush of free agency is over and yet, even more holes remain for the Patriots than when it started. Yes, they signed Jabaal Sheard, a slam dunk fit for them by all accounts. But significant questions remain at guard, running back and cornerback. Here are some thoughts on what the current rumors and […]
