Frenz: An Overview of Specialization in the Patriots 3-4 Defense

Frenz: An Overview of Specialization in the Patriots 3-4 Defense

Frenz and I have discussed specialization in the Patriots defense ad nauseaum on our podcast, but he really does a great job here of breaking it down into it’s simplest terms.

Ultimately you can live with a specialized defense if the players are talented enough to play run and pass. As was often the case early in the 2010 season teams had success running on the Patriots sub-defenses. Preventing that is just a matter of winning the battles in the trenches.

We saw the Jets try to do it a couple times in the playoff game and the Pats were able to stop them, especially in a couple key situations.

NFLN: Patriots Draft Recap

NFLN: Patriots Draft Recap

The NFL Network is certainly drawing everything out as long as they possibly can, hence the Patriots draft recap a month later. Baldy’s the only one who mentions the lack of a pass rush but am I wrong is saying he kinda contradicts himself when he names off all these mid-round pass rushers who didn’t come in to high acclaim but worked hard and developed, then he mentions Markell Carter in passing? Isn’t Carter a mid-round guy who appears to have a great work ethic?

NFLN: Who will win the AFCE?

NFLN: Who will win the AFCE?

I know I’m as biased as they come but let’s make a quick bullet point argument of why I think the Patriots will win the AFCE.

  • Bodden/Ty Warren return from injury
  • If Matt Light re-signs there will be no major free agency departures
  • Entire defense returns with another year of experience
  • TFB
  • BB

The Jets are clearly the only other contender but most of their wide receivers and cornerbacks aren’t even on under contract right now. So yeah some of them will re-sign, and some of them probably won’t. And any new guys will have to get up to speed pretty quick, especially if the first 3 games are lost and the Jets end up opening their season in Foxboro.

The NFLN dudes also get into some discussion of Randy Moss potentially joining the Jets. I’m all for that if it’s at the expense of Santonio Holmes or Braylon Edwards.  There’s no question those two receivers are far more suited to the Jets offense.

And I mean come on, Mark Sanchez hitting Moss on a 60 yard bomb? Never. Gonna Happen.

New Ras-I Dowling Highlight Video

This guy’s pretty physical, huh. I know a lot of people were bummed they didn’t take a OLB at 33, but New England’s secondary is quietly becoming one of the most high draft pick-laden anywhere. We’re talking big, tough defensive backs who can battle with the big receivers of the AFC East.

ESPN/Reiss: Fletcher surprise contributor in 2010

ESPN/Reiss: Fletcher surprise contributor in 2010

No one can break it down like Reiss, and here is joining a quickly-filling bandwagon for Dane Fletcher. Here’s an interesting nugget:

Fletcher thinks the work with Mayo and about 10-15 other teammates, coupled with more knowledge he’s gained on nutrition through his first year in the NFL, has paid dividends.

“Once I got out of college and got around professional football players, I really pay attention to what I eat and drink now, and everything that I take. The biggest improvement I’ve probably had, between last year and this year, is my nutrition,” he said. “I feel like I’m more lean, not as fatty as I was last year, so I’ve leaned down, but I’m weighing quite a bit more. I’m in way better shape than I was last year.”

Fletcher played last season at around 240-242 pounds. He’s up to the 246-248 range, and he’s encouraged that he feels faster despite the added weight.

Reiss also mentions that Jermaine Cunningham is among those working out with the Mayo group. Many will fail to see how both these items are positive news for the Pats pass rush.

Someone better tell Sammy Morris there’s two rookies fighting over his number. Or should I say “his old number”? Yeah that’s what I thought.

This is my Patriots Padawan. He was born three days after Tom Brady blew out his knee against the Chiefs and is now just about to turn two so his Patriots training is about to really kick into gear. I’ve got my eye on a Mike Vrabel jersey this season for him. Why Vrabel you […]
