USA Today: Plethora of Belichick footage prompted documentary

USA Today: Plethora of Belichick footage prompted documentary

Would you say we have a plethora of footage, NFL Films?

Rodgers says, outside of games, NFL Films only requested to film about 40% of Belichick’s job — “football on a daily basis can be boring” — and captured scenes of Belichick actually “joking.” Who knew?

Ugh, everyone. Are there really people out there who still think BB is a humorless troglodyte? Whatever, I’m so pumped for this doc in 13 days. I just wish they could’ve separated it from the start of the season, because I will be on Patriots excitement overload that week.

NFL Films Senior Producer Greg Cosell on Gronk & Hernando

NFL Films Senior Producer Greg Cosell on Gronk & Hernando

Great stuff in here, I highly recommend you check out the rest of this four-part interview. Cosell has been studying all-22 game tape for a while now and knows his stuff as well as anyone. Here’s his take on Gronk and Hernando:

Waldman: Tell me what you observe with the Patriots offense and its use of Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. Do you feel they will compete for opportunities or do you think they complement each other? Or maybe a better way to ask this question is how do you see each player best used to attack opposing defenses?

Cosell: I think  Gronkowski is an all-around tight end who can do everything. I think he’s a better Jason Witten because he’s a little more athletic. I’m a big fan of him based on what I’ve seen and I saw a lot of him last year.  I think he’s better on the line of scrimmage.

Hernandez is a “Joker,” that’s a term I use for a guy that lines up all over the formation. He’s more of a wide receiver in the way he moves. My guess is that you’ll rarely see him lined up on the line of scrimmage in a traditional tight end formation.

I really liked Hernandez coming out and I was surprised that he was drafted so late given the NFL the way it is now with the way that he can line up all over the formation and create mismatches for himself and others. And he’s a young kid so there’s room to grow.

I don’t know if they will compete for balls. I think the Patriots have a very multidimensional, diverse offense where they use a lot of people in a lot of different ways. But I think they are different players.

Waldman: The way I see Hernandez in today’s environment is the fact that you can put him wide, in the slot, occasionally on the line of scrimmage, on the wing, or as an H-Back that he could see a lot of balls this year.

Cosell: Yeah, but again due to the nature of the offense I don’t know if anybody is going to catch – with the possible exception of Welker – 90 balls. But I could be wrong, you never know with the Patriots.

Aaaand I’m over the Patriots preseason, let’s get this mother f’er started!

Some dart thoughts on tonight’s Giants whatever you want to call it.

– I’m reading only a little bit into Meriweather playing the second half. They couldn’t just have Sergio and Josh Barrett back there. They wouldn’t have know what they were doing and both of them would have looked bad. Instead they both got to play with a veteran who could make sure they got the correct calls and adjustments. That’s how you accurately assess how good players are.

– That said, I find it interesting that it was Chung out there first. I think this clearly shows the coaching staff trusts him more than they do Meriweather.

– Gasper says not to worry about Bodden, so I’m giving Gasper one more chance to redeem himself for all the annoying, un-insightful columns over the past two years. Let’s assume Bodden is fine.

– Even if Bodden is ready week one I’m still concerned about the health of Kyle Arrington. Though to be honest I don’t think D-But playing is as much a certain death as I did two weeks ago. We’ll see if he can hold up in the slot or ‘star’ as everyone likes to point out now as the thing the Patriots call that position. That brings us to two. Star and Elephant. Kinda weird right?

– Didn’t get a close enough look at Ras-I. Can’t say I was excited he was having tight hamstring issues on the sidelines early on. Thank Hoodie he came back in.

– I think that an Ellis-Wilfork-Haynesworth-Carter front four is going to be nasty. Hard to read too much into tonight with back up Gigantes playing but it was pretty clear the kind of force Haynesworth can bring up the middle.

-With Spikes in there with that group… Wowww #POWWW

– Weird that I’m not even concerned about Jermaine Cunningham right now?

– You know who really really really wants to win a Super Bowl? Shaun Ellis. And he’s gonna be a beast against his former team.

– Brady switched helmets. Looks like he’s upgraded to a modern, more concussion proof one like Brian Hoyer wears. Luckily his facemask still looks the same so his Elite QB Look remains intact. We will of course be examining the switch obsessively over the coming weeks.

– Vereen. I don’t know… Phantom injury?

– Josh Barrett. Kinda intrigued. Could he sneak on? He was not auditioning on Special Teams tonight. Something might be there. Putting him out first with Chung over Sergio says something.

– Ohrnberger look a little better tonight?

– This weekend will be crazy and there might be players gone that we never saw coming, and new players on the 53-man Patriots roster that are on another team right now. It’s the best part of Labor Day Weekend.

Heeeeere’s Haynesworth. Seriously, what a load in the middle. Good luck moving him and Wilfork outta there. And btw, Grade A Defensive Lineman look.

So the league created fake duress for Brady via false evidence and then found him guilty for reacting to it in an understandable fashion. This is a rather aggressive interrogation tactic generally reserved for murder investigations, terrorist questionings and Law & Order reruns. It isn’t how anyone would normally expect the league office to act […]
