The Best/Worst Weekly Links in Patriots-10/15

October 15, 2016 by Nikolas Davos

Do you guys know who the two longest tenured head coaches are in the National Football League? One, Bill Belichick. Two…drum roll please…

This guy. Marvin freakin’ Lewis. Owner of an 0-7 playoff record. Yikes. Speaking of records, I’m going to sound like a broken one when I say this, but it has to be “put up or shut up” time for Marv this year, right? Doesn’t it? Cincy has been loaded for years now, and has very little to show for it, getting outclassed in January season after season. Now at 2-3, coming off a thorough beatdown at the hands of the Dallas Cowboys, Cincy comes into Foxborough in a certifiable panic. Making matters worse for the Bengals, they’re coming right in time for the football version of Dexter’s home opener.

tom-brady-combinedexter-dexter-26095020-1280-800

The resemblance is actually uncanny…but I digress. Let’s get some links going.

Mike Petraglia (WEEI) wrote a somewhat scathing scouting report of the Bengals in his “5 Things to Know” piece this week. Petraglia writes:

“The swagger of the Bengals, something they enjoyed over their current five-year playoff run, is gone. It disappeared with their epic playoff meltdown against the Steelers and the team’s decision to bring back Pacman and Vontaze Burfict, the two principals at the center of Cincinnati’s choke job in the final 60 seconds. The Bengals reacted like they normally do – they did nothing.”

I couldn’t agree more. Not only did they drop another high pressure game, that team self destructed on national television in a home playoff matchup. If that wasn’t the boiling point to make sweeping organizational and personnel changes, I really don’t know what will be.

Now that we adequately summed up the Bengals, let’s move on to some Pats’ pieces. Doug Kyed (NESN) opined on the Patriots’ revamped double tight end attack here, and explained how it was only a snippet of things to come:

“Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett combined for 11 receptions, 176 yards and three touchdowns Sunday in the Patriots’ 33-13 win over the Cleveland Browns, but both tight ends ran routes on just six of those completions. Gronkowski was on the field for 81 percent of snaps, while Bennett played on 69 percent.”

In other words, this combination is just getting started. Is it bold to say the present duo is more difficult to defend than the Gronk/Hernandez pairing of a few years back? Bennett’s blocking has to be accounted for, Hernandez’s never did. The defense is left completely unbalanced, as the offense can run, pass, and play action out of the two tight end set with equal effectiveness. That’s simply not fair.

A couple player focus pieces from PatsPropaganda’s own Rick Starke on running back James White, and Rich Hill of Pats Pulpit on rookie linebacker Elandon Roberts. Both guys do a great job of bringing proof to the table, with excellent film clips throughout each respective piece. Watching White pick up a blitz off the edge to allow Brady to get a throw off, and Roberts blowing up CLE All-Pro left tackle Joe Thomas and, in turn, running back Isaiah Crowell are worth the price of admission. Starke stresses the importance of White’s blocking, “White showed the awareness to protect Tom Brady from an unabated shot to the chin from the blitzing corner” which has largely been good this season. On that note, don’t just expect Dion Lewis to come right in and take all White’s reps away, I’m expecting something closer to a 3-headed monster (Blount, Lewis, White). McDaniels has an opportunity to get very creative, especially with the two smaller backs on the field at the same time. Hill had some high praise for Roberts, not only regarding his physicality in the run game (“Roberts makes the tackle through Thomas’ block as the Patriots force a major stop. This was a Brandon Spikes-level run stuff”, but his pass coverage as well:

“Roberts’ coverage wasn’t perfect, but he absolutely took away the play from Pryor and dropped well into coverage. This is awareness above and beyond some other linebackers on the roster.”

Before we start calling this kid Tedy Bruschi, let’s have him string together a couple of weeks first. Extremely encouraging nonetheless. Plus, this hopefully means Jonathan Freeny can stay far away from the defense and stick to his bread and butter on special teams.

To wrap up this week, Jeff Howe (Boston Herald) argues that Brady’s suspension helped the Pats in the short and long term. He writes:

“In the first four weeks, Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett combined to absorb eight sacks and 16 hits, including one that wrapped up Garoppolo’s starting cameo and another that essentially ended Brissett’s season. There’s nothing wrong with keeping Brady away from that level of abuse.”

Do we want those four games back? Of course. Does Tom want those four games back? Of course. Did he get railroaded? Of course. But would you take 3-1, a division lead, and a fresh Brady for October on? Of. Course.

At the end of the day, we’re onto Cincinnati, Brady’s home, and I can’t wait.

New England Patriots Gameplan: Week 6 vs. Cincinnati Bengals

October 14, 2016 by Mike Dussault

Once again, we’re on to Cincinnati! And yours truly is especially excited because it’s time for my annual pilgrimage home for a Pats game. I saw plenty of games as a kid when the Patriots stunk in the 80’s and 90’s, but in the summer of 2006 I still hadn’t seen a live Brady/Belichick and decided it was time that changed.

2006 AFCDG

2006 AFCDG vs. SD Pregame

Since then I’ve been to 13 Patriots games, and the Pats are 10-3 overall. The only losses — ’08 at SD, ’11 vs NYG and ’12 at SEA. The best wins — ’06 AFCDG at SD and ’14 vs. DEN. Hopefully this game gets us to 11 wins! But really, the result of the game is always secondary to the good times with family and friends, and the excitement leading up to the game itself.

And if you’d like to join us, we’ve got a bus running out of Quincy Center to the game and will have a bunch of stuff to giveaway as well. So yes, it will be a wonderful day and we’ll have social media updates flying all over the place.

It seemed like the Pats and Bengals were on a collision course last season, but then Andy Dalton got hurt and Cinci later imploded against the Steelers in the playoffs and it never happened. Now, the 2-3 Bengals aren’t off to the same hot start they had last year, and let’s face it, usually the Pats have their way with Marvin Lewis‘ team, save that one rainy performance in 2013 on the road.

So maybe there’s a little less hype surrounding this one than we might’ve thought, but still, the Bengals have plenty of talent on both sides of the ball and this will be a good challenge for a Patriots team that is starting to round into form after the return of Tom Brady.

Here’s the gameplan to get a win and make my annual trip a success.

A Little Bit of James White Appreciation

October 13, 2016 by Rick Starke

James White has had many detractors over his first two years as a Patriot, despite showing some promise. I’ve been one of those, as have other members of the staff here at PatsProp (yup me  – Mike D). All offseason, we had been looking for more from him, or expecting him to go, especially with some of us expecting DJ Foster to take his spot if he didn’t step up.

As for the rest of Patriots Nation, we had observed two camps on this…the pro-James White crowd (as Mike D had dubbed, The White Boys , and the pro-DJ Foster crowd (uh…Foster Families?). Well, nearly one third of the way through the season, the White Boys have been correct here, and it has been a great sight to see.

First, we’ll start with a play versus the Browns that will NEVER show up on a stat sheet that anyone cares about, but I almost jumped out of my seat with excitement when I watched it live:

corner-blitz-pickup

WHEW.

Look at that. James White is lined up at the snap on Brady’s left. White reads the overload blitz from the offense’s right, shifts across the formation, sees Cameron Fleming pick up the inside blitzing linebacker, and continues outside the tackle to pick up the blitzing defensive back. This play would be a film junkie’s DREAM if the pass didn’t end up incomplete on a great breakup by Brian Boddy-Calhoun…but the important thing here is that White showed the awareness to protect Tom Brady from an unabated shot to the chin from the blitzing corner.

A Closer Look at Elandon Roberts

October 12, 2016 by Mike Dussault

By now you’ve probably had the treat of seeing Patriots rookie Elandon Roberts run right through Joe Thomas to tackle Isaiah Crowell this past weekend. If not here it is from the end zone cam of the All-22 which really captures what a wrecking ball Roberts was.

elandon roberts

This is the kind of thumping the Patriots have really missed since Brandon Spikes left (and then came back only to leave again). The Patriots struggles against the run last season when Dont’a Hightower was out were well-documented, yet the Patriots still did little this offseason to address their linebacker depth.

Enter the 214th overall pick in the draft. Roberts immediately showed up in preseason because he comes downhill like a runaway dump truck, destroying anything in his path. In the final preseason game, Roberts went down with what looked like a game-ending ankle injury. Yet, perhaps knowing he was on the bubble to make the team. Roberts battled through the injury and returned to lead the team with nine total tackles.

Week 6 Scouting Report: Cincinnati Bengals

October 12, 2016 by Adam Magnacca

Tom Brady is coming home. The beginning of the season the magnifying glass was on the defense and seeing if they could be the winning force on the team. Now, we turn to the consistently top tier offense, headed by the Legendary QB, as well as an impossibly intimidating TE duo of Gronk and Bennett. After righting the ship against The Brownies, New England has a real test against a legitimate AFC team.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Bengals, aka, “The Red Heads”

Patriots Special Teams Report – Week 5 @ Cleveland Browns

October 11, 2016 by Sam Hollister

Patriots Special Teams 16wk5

What a return it was for the greatest quarterback to ever live. Having to watch Jacoby Brissett for two and a half games really makes one appreciate the greatness of Tom Brady even more, and it seemed to elevate and motivate the entire team as a whole. Special teams had another solid week, with the lone hiccup being Stephen Gostkowski’s third miss on the season.

Gostkowski started the season off on the right foot, nailing all three field goals (at distances of 47, 53, and 32 yards) against Arizona in Week 1, and was named the AFC Specialist of the Week. However, it’s been all downhill from there for the highest-paid kicker in the NFL since: Gostkowski has missed three of his next seven kicks in the past four games (keep in mind, he missed three total last season).

He missed a 39-yarder wide right against Miami, pushed a 48-yarder to the right of the goalposts against Buffalo, and most recently hit one too far to the right on a 50-yarder on Sunday. Notice a trend on his misses? All wide right. All of his misses have had plenty of distance, but each time his kicks have sailed too far to the right. Seeing as Gostkowski is the fourth-most accurate kicker in NFL history, Patriot Nation should be confident that he will correct whatever flaw is ailing him at the moment. Be sure to watch how Gostkowski does in the coming weeks, even on the ones he makes.

Patriots-Browns Film Review: Third Down Defense Edition

October 11, 2016 by Mike Dussault

In this week’s film review I’m going to take a little more micro look at the third downs that the Patriots failed to get stops on against the Browns. Right now the Patriots are 27th in the NFL in third down defense (44.6 percent, worst since 2010) and 30th in red zone defense (80 percent).

Combine the two and the Patriots are by far the worst third down defense in the red zone in the NFL, giving up a first down 83.3 percent of the time. The second-worst team in the league, Baltimore, is at 70 percent, while the third-worst, Houston, is at 57.1 percent. That shows just how far below the rest of the league the Patriots have been in the critical area of their beloved bend-don’t-break, which depends immensely on third down stops in the red zone.

Now I’m not here to go all doom and gloom on the defense. These stats are certainly concerning, but there’s a long way to go and with Tom Brady back in the mix, we’re just getting our first taste of the real 2016 Patriots. So we can reserve some judgement at this point.

Here’s a look at five third downs against the Browns with what went wrong and how the Pats might fix it.
