Bruschi’s Breakdown: Patriots vs. Raiders

Bruschi’s Breakdown: Patriots vs. Raiders

You won’t find a better game preview anywhere. One really interesting nugget from Mike Reiss:

I’m wondering if we might see the old 3-4 alignment back again, especially after reports surfaced that the Patriots are bringing back veteran defensive lineman Gerard Warren. I could envision a three-man front with Shaun Ellis, Vince Wilfork and Gerard Warren. Then you have Jerod Mayo and Brandon Spikes at inside linebacker, with Jermaine Cunningham and Rob Ninkovich at outside linebacker. Let’s see if they go that route to combat this running game.

Did Brandon Spikes get a finger on this ball? After reviewing the film the Patriots thought he did, and thus the pass interference call on Sergio in the End Zone should’ve not been called.

You can literally see the difference in inches between winning and losing in the NFL here. If Sergio doesn’t get that penalty, Barrett’s interception stands and the Pats most likely win. Oh well.

Of course the Bills winning this game in week three totally ensures that when the two teams meet again in week seventeen that the Pats won’t be resting starters and the Bills getting their golf clubs ready, right?

I like the Patriots in this game. I would have picked the Raiders had the Patriots beaten the Bills, but here is why I like New England. I view this game as one in which the logo needs to be defended. The Patriots have been called a finesse team. The defense is under media siege. I believe the players are better than they’ve shown and that they will rally around this to beat the Raiders. As long as the OL can protect, I like the Patriots to put up 30-plus points in this game, and I don’t see the Raiders keeping pace.

Mike Reiss summing up my feelings perfectly in his weekly chat.

Here’s something I’d prefer not to see Sunday. This guy is a beast and must be contained. If he’s allowed to run it will open up the Raiders offense to attack any and every way.

The Patriots will need huge games from Ninkovich, Ellis and Carter in keeping McFadden from gaining the edge. They must force him inside where hopefully some combination of Wilfork, Haynesworth, and Warren will be waiting for him.

The same thing happened with Cleveland last year, and we continued to get better after that. I think we ran off a good number of games in a row,” he said. “So hopefully that trend continues. … You feel it in the locker room, just that sense of urgency to get better now. I wouldn’t say pressure, but now is the time.

Patriots UDFA Profile: Anthony Leonard, WVU LB At 6-01, 254 it doesn’t immediately appear that Leonard is a physical fit outside of WILB, but would ideally be a candidate as a core special teams player. (Source: https://www.youtube.com/)
