ESPN Boston: Arrington shining in slot corner role

ESPN Boston: Arrington shining in slot corner role

All off-season long we envisioned the Patriots secondary with McCourty and Bodden on the outside and Arrington taking over the star position in the slot. But earlier in the preseason, especially against Detroit, Arrington struggled there and it made us question if he had the quick change of direction skill needed to play there.

Often times slot corners are the third corners on the depth chart but their position can be even harder to play than on the outside where you have the sidelines to help you.

As you can see from the stats below Arrington has had a good start to the season, with three interceptions and giving up receptions on just 38.6% of his targets.

  • Devin McCourty – 36 targets, 24 receptions (66%), 378 yards, 3 TD, 0 INT, 129.2 QB rating
  • Ras-I Dowling – 7 targets, 3 receptions (42.9%), 74 yards, 0 TD, 0 INT, 81.8 QB rating
  • Kyle Arrington – 13 targets, 5 receptions (38.5%), 79 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, 19.9 QB rating
  • Leigh Bodden – 16 targets, 10 receptions (62.5%), 176 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT, 120.8 QB rating

That the Pats can score at will, that Tom Brady is at times human and that their secondary must improve quickly. The Pats are a top team but are a work in progress on defense. Stevan Ridley looks like a big-time back.

ProFootballWeekly: Soloman Wilcots breaks down Pats-Raiders

(The Raiders) have to get pressure in the face of Tom Brady, not pressure off the edge or corner, but pushing the pocket into the face of Brady, forcing him to go left or right. They don’t want to let him step up in the pocket, which is easier said than done, but they have the personnel to do it. Seymour has every reason to get going in this one.

Patriots-Raiders preview from a local Oakland station. It’s hard not to be impressed with the freak show that is The Black Hole.

Last time the Patriots visited Oakland in 2008 Jamarcus Russell actually didn’t look quite so horrible.

This could be the first time Roman Phifer has popped up here on the blog. That’s kind of sad. Sorry Roman, you deserve better from me.

gahdengremlins:

Boston Sports By The Numbers: No. 95 – Roman Phifer

After being dumped by the Jets before the 2001 season, Phifer signed a contract with the Patriots for the veteran minimum. Starting every game that season, he recorded 93 tackles as an overlooked leader on the Pats defense, and helped defeat the Rams, the team that drafted him, in Super Bowl XXXVI.

Phifer stuck around for three more years, which yielded two more Super Bowl victories, two seasons of more than 100 tackles, and two selections as a Pro Bowl alternate. Struggling with injuries, however, the Patriots let his contract expire after 2004. He now coaches linebackers for the Broncos.
