Patriots vs. Steelers 2007: Brady to Moss to Brady to Gaffney

This is possibly the single greatest offensive play of the historic 2007 season and I’m proud to say I was there to see it, in the very last row of Gillette Stadium. The Steelers are so aggressive on defense they leave themselves open to stuff like this with over pursuit. That’s why we’ll see a ton of screens and trickeration from the Pats this Sunday.

Steelers defense needs some new tweaks to stop Patriots

We’ll probably be hitting on this point a lot this week but the Steelers really need to throw some new wrinkles this week on defense. The problem is their run defense has been atrocious this year and once teams can establish the ground game it opens everything else up.

Aggressive defenses like the Steelers are often burned by misdirection, reverses and play action and when you can’t stop the run the problems of stopping those are even more compounded.

And you can’t get too cute with your pass defense and pressure packages when you can’t stop the run. So the pressure is on the Pittsburgh defense this week, because it’s been a long, long time since they stopped Tom Brady.

I know Dick Lebeau’s zone blitz was revolutionary back in the day but it has not given Tom Brady problems since 2004, and even then it was partially due to a rash of injuries and a sloppy 2-int/1 fumble game from TFB. What would really worry me is if we suddenly see all the Steelers defenders up walking around pre snap like we see from the Ryan defenses.

That would be a sure sign that the Steelers mean business and aren’t too stubborn to stick to their basic defensive plan that works against just about every offense out there.

Hey look! It’s the last time the Steelers beat Tom Brady. 7 years ago.

Monday AFC Regroup from a Pats Perspective

October 24, 2011 by Mike Dussault

We made it through the bye week!! It was a fairly boring day of football watching at the Ministry of PatsPropaganda, especially with the Jets come back win over the Chargers.

Let’s refocus on what’s ahead for the Pats and how the rest of the AFC is shaking out.

First we must begin with the Jets who turned in an impressive win over the unimpressive Chargers. I think Mark Sanchez still looks off to me, but their defense finally stepped up and sparked the team with some big plays.

The game itself looked a lot to me like the Jets win over the Patriots in the playoffs last year. Even with two wins in a row I still see the Jets as a second level AFC team, similar to the same way I see the Chargers who suddenly look like their following up on their first missed playoff appearance in a while with another lackluster season. A lot of that probably has to do with how banged up they are.

Mark Sanchez still just seems off to me. And everyone can suddenly pretend Plaxico is back to the threat he was before prison, but he still looks, as one scout put it, “like he has a piano on his back” to me.

This sets up a great match up for the Jets and Bills after the Jets bye week. The Jets will need that time to prepare, especially for Fred Jackson. I love that the Jets have to go to Buffalo this time. After this game we should have a pretty good sense of whether it’s a one or two team race for second place in the AFC East. 🙂

Stick a harpoon in the Dolphins, they are done.

It’s definitely premature to say this but as of this moment it seems like the AFC representative in the Super Bowl will be us, the Steelers or the Ravens. I’m not convinced the Bills have the horses to hold up all season. The Texans could be a wild card but I have my doubts about Matt Schaub and their secondary.

I’m sure Steeler fans are excited to welcome BB back…

Belichick said today that not much has changed with the Steelers defense over the last twenty years which is probably why cracking the code of what it takes to hang 30+ points isn’t that difficult. Executing it can be, but the 2004 AFCCG, and the 2007 and 2010 games all prove that the Patriots know how to beat the Steelers.

The three-year deal recently signed by Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis has a base value, according to a league source, of $9 million. Making it worth $3 million per year. And matching the annual average of the contracts signed last year by Panthers kicker Olindo Mare and Vikings kicker Ryan Longwell. It doesn’t make it […]
