Inside the Patriots locker room after beating the Jets

Last night was the fist time I caught NFL Turning Point on Versus and I was blown away by it. It was as if someone took the epic nature of the NFL Films game highlights off of Inside the NFL and married them to X-and-O goodness of NFL Playbook to make a segment that lasted nearly fifteen minutes. It looks like I’ve just found my new favorite show!

PatsFans/Logue: Tom Brady Talks About the ‘Cat and Mouse’ Game that Goes on PreSnap

PatsFans/Logue: Tom Brady Talks About the ‘Cat and Mouse’ Game that Goes on PreSnap

Great insightful stuff here from FOPP’er Ian Logue over at PatsFans.com.

Good nugget from Brady:

“So they say, ‘Let’s disguise, let’s disguise,’ and I go up and say, ‘Blue go,’ and the ball is snapped and now they have a guy totally out of position,” explained Brady.  ”There’s a fine line between what you’re doing and if we feel that it’s going to be a big disguise game, then you have a lot of quick counts. Ultimately, if they’re showing what you’re doing, then you take your time.

“That’s just the cat-and-mouse that goes on all day long especially with good defenses and good secondaries. You could have one guy that’s trying to disguise but if nobody else is, that makes no sense. Really it’s a coordinated effort by a defense to try to disguise. Ultimately, it’s about covering guys and being in the right position. You can try to disguise all you want, but if the offense is making plays then ultimately the coach is going to say ‘Screw this, go over and cover your guy.’”

And now a moment with the pass rusher himself Andre Carter. No question this guy has been the 2011 defensive MVP for the Patriots and he’s only on a one year deal. Time to lock him up for at least two more!

Football Outsiders: Patriots DVOA Rankings

November 16, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Here’s where Football Outsiders DVOA rankings have the Pats this week. DVOA is one of the only stats I really put much weight into because it measures efficiency while taking the situation into account.

So every time you hear some pundit say the Pats have the worst defense in the NFL they’re referring to yards allowed, which doesn’t really mean much.

Most impressive of the stats below is how the Pats best point on defense has been their coverage on running backs, a major weakness in 2010. Of course they’re ranked dead last in the NFL against the number one wide receivers. Devin McCourty’s absence certainly won’t help that.

They also have the Pats with a 91.7% chance of making the playoffs.

Overall: 4th

Offense: 2nd

  • Passing: 2nd
  • Rushing: 5th

Defense: 23rd

  • vs. Pass: 21st
  • vs. Run: 24th
  • vs. #1 WR: 32nd
  • vs. #2 WR: 15th
  • vs. other WR: 18th
  • vs. TE: 22nd
  • vs. RB: 5th

Special Teams: 12th

Boston Globe/Bedard: For the most part, a job done right

Boston Globe/Bedard: For the most part, a job done right

Good breakdown here from Greg Bedard, have to agree with his observations, especially where it comes to Brady and the offense. I don’t think anyone would’ve thought at halftime the Pats were going to dominate the second half like they did, especially given their second half history of late at the Jets homefield.

Couple nuggets of note:

It is no coincidence that Ninkovich has played his best ball of the season the past two games. He bottomed out against Pittsburgh and the coaches had to realize they were asking too much of the versatile backer to play in base and rush end in sub packages. Ninkovich played about 20 fewer snaps against the Giants and Jets each. He’s still in base, but now he’s in a rotation with Anderson and Deaderick as the sub rusher.

The Patriots had their best pass-blocking game of the season against a scheme that has given them fits since Ryan arrived. The Patriots allowed just nine quarterback pressures: no sacks, seven hurries, and two knockdowns (though the safety on which Sebastian Vollmer and Woodhead failed to make the block on Jamaal Westerman should be ruled a sack). The bad news is the unit had by far its worst run-blocking performance with 12 stuffed runs allowed.

Veteran DE Mark Anderson is perhaps the most interesting player to analyze, in part because he’s scheduled for unrestricted free agency. In all, his playing time numbers reflect that of a part-time defender (47.6%), but in the final two games of the year, he played every snap but one in each contest. So when considering […]
