I have nothing to do but sit on my butt and watch football today. Just like the last day of Thanksgiving weekend should be.

I know the Eagles have a lot of injuries today (as do the Pats I might add) but I still think this game will be a tough test for us. I’d like to see our offense get off to a quick start for once, and more of the same out of the defense.

It will all come down to shutting down Lesean McCoy which I’m confident the Pats should be able to do.

This is when the real playoff push begins and the 2011 Pats identity will be solidified. Let’s see if they can take a positive step forward.

fuckyeahphiladelphiaeagles:

The Patriots do things a bit backwards on offense. Where most teams go downfield with their WRs and play the shorter, ball control game with their TEs, the Pats flip that around. They have no real deep threat at WR, but effectively use Wes Welker as a move the chanis type option. To stretch the field, they look to their two big TEs, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, who 2nd and 3rd on the team in receptions respectively. Gronkowski averages a team leading 14.4 yards per catch and the pair have caught 15 TDs between them.

Andy Reid talked this week about their philosophy.

“I think you saw a couple years back that they changed a little bit on their film from the past game and they invested a lot, player-wise surrounding Tom with a lot of weapons. And when I said the two tight ends were a little different Hernandez is a guy that’s kind of a tweener wide receiver, tight end type of player and Gronkowski’s just big, he’s bigger physically, and probably not quite as nimble but still uses his size to his advantage. So I think [Patriots head coach] Bill [Belichek] saw a lot of quality there and big targets that can move a little bit that are important for your quarterback.”

I don’t have to tell you how the Eagles have struggled with TEs over the years, so for a team to put two good ones on the field at once is obviously a tough proposition. It would be even tougher if Nnamdi Asomugha were not able to go this weekend after suffering a knee injury in practice yesterday.

No mas Ochocinco when Pats visit Eagles

November 27, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Chad Ochocinco will be out when the Patriots travel to Philly to take on the Eagles. It’s listed as a hamstring but it’s a somewhat suspicious injury as it happened at practice, and no one noticed anything visibly wrong with him.

Could this be a way for the Pats to protect Ocho a bit from the media firestorm that would be sure to hit if, gasp, Chad Ochocinco was actually benched by Bill Belichick, despite being less of a factor than Brandon Tate was last year? It could very well be so.

Ocho no playo special teams, whereas Taylor Price and Tuquan Underwood do. And we know Belichick’s ability to play coy to keep media heat to a minimum.

Regardless, Taylor Price could have an opportunity to show something tomorrow. And whether he does or not could very well affect Chad and his injury.

Also, one of the good things about the backup quarterback is he’s always working against our defense. Whatever you think of our defense, it’s the best that we can put out there, so [Mallett is] getting reps against our best players on defense, what they’re doing relative to our scout defense, trying to simulate what our opponents are doing. I think those reps are good, too, because as a quarterback, you make that competitive. You’re trying to complete a pass and execute a play against a defense that sort of knows it’s coming and they’re sort of geared to stop it, hopefully. That’s a competitive situation, too.

Anyone else find the “whatever you think of our defense” line kinda funny?

Some Pats nuggets from Football Outsiders’ 2013 Almanac

One of my favorite days of the offseason is when Football Outsiders drop their almanac. There is not a better advanced statistical preview out there, and it always sheds a final bit of light on the previous season. Here are some nuggets I took away that I hadn’t known beforehand… – First, I love it […]
