A lot of Patriots fans liked Ryan Kerrigan heading into this year’s draft including FOPP’er Kristin over at The Foxhole, with the people who were writing him off (like yours truly) unconvinced he could play OLB in the 3-4 defense. Of course the Patriots ended up going to primarily a 4-3 defense this year and then Nick Caserio drops this nugget today:

Ryan can play in any system. Good football player, tough, smart, instinctive, strong, disruptive player, causes a number of fumbles, which he’s caused four [of] to this point in this season for the Redskins. He can play in any defense. It doesn’t matter what front you’re playing, what defense you’re playing; he can probably play in any of them.

So uh, yeah…

At least it will be good to see the young pass rusher this weekend, hopefully it’s just not in our backfield or anywhere near TFB.

top 5 julian edelman moments.

December 7, 2011 by Mike Dussault

allthingsshannon:

PatsPropaganda note: Great stuff here from HerebyNewEnglandRules. I know there are a lot of Julian Edelman fans out there that will enjoy this.

THIS IS SO HARD THOUGH, here’s my attempt.

1. His first ever punt return, which ended up being a touchdown in Philly.

2. His punt return against Miami last year.

3. His hit on LT at the Jets game in November.

4. His punt return against the Chiefs a few weeks ago.

5. His tackle against Vince Young the other week.

That was fun 😉

Have to admit I really like the aesthetics of the Redskins stadium. Feels closed in and slightly claustrophobic. I imagine it’s a tough place to play for the visiting team.

It looks like the 2011 Patriots will end up having played only three, maybe four, playoff teams in the 2011 regular season. You’ll have the AFC West and the NFC East winners along with Pittsburgh, and who knows if the Jets might sneak in. Who’d have thought this would end up being such a creampuff schedule?

PFF/Palazzolo: Re-Focused Patriots vs. Colts

PFF/Palazzolo: Re-Focused Patriots vs. Colts

Good stuff as always from Steve. Glad to see Jerod Mayo starting to grade out well. We really need him to elevate his game to the next level where he’s making game changing plays instead of just tackles.

Here’s a nugget about Ninkopoop:

Since his terrible Week 8 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, linebacker Rob Ninkovich (+2.7) has quietly put together a few straight weeks of strong play, as he has graded at +10.1 in that time. One of the most versatile players on the team, you may see Ninkovich set the edge in the running game, line up over the slot, or rush the passer from a three point stance, all in the same series. On Sunday, he saw 25 plays at linebacker and put his hand down to play defensive end 38 times. Ninkovich looked extremely quick, first in the running game as he flew past TE Anthony Hill for a tackle for loss at the 3:05 mark in the first quarter and later as he beat right tackle Jeff Linkenbach off the edge for a sack with 14:35 to go in the second. It really is amazing to see how Ninkovich will be used in a given week, as sometimes he primarily plays coverage while other games he is used as more of a pass rusher. Since Belichick loves to mix up his game plans every week, Ninkovich’s ability to line up at multiple spots is of utmost importance.

A little Patriots negativity to get the blood boiling

December 6, 2011 by Mike Dussault

Patriots fans might as well write this off as another AFC East title-winning, playoff disappointment season now according to most of the chatter across the internet today.

We’ve got resident parade poo pooer Bert Breer on Gresh and Zo saying he “just doesn’t see it with this defense” and CSNNE’s Mike Giardi playing the playmaker card again:

It’s about playmakers. Packers got em defensively. Pats lacking. Best defender a DT, Wilfork. Love Carter but can/has been neutralized.

I’m not going to try and make a case that the Patriots defense is the ‘85 Bears or even the ’86 Bears, but I think it’s all about match ups in the playoffs and with Tom Brady it’s foolish to write a team’s Super Bowl hopes off in early December. We’ve seen plenty of flashes from this defense in 2011 that gives me far more belief they are capable of winning a pressure-packed playoff game than either of the past two seasons.

If the Pats were in the NFC there’s no doubt the odds would be higher for them get to the Super Bowl, but in the AFC there is not a team the Pats can’t beat. No question the Steelers will provide the biggest challenge, but let’s not forget how that game has turned out every time those two teams have met in the playoffs.

Regardless of who represents the NFC we’ve been down this road once before. The 2001 Patriots defense was a similarly disrespected crew of cast offs and never-have-beens and they shut down what was at that point one of the most unstoppable offenses ever seen.

And to Giardi’s point of it being about playmakers, how about we line up the 2001 Patriots offense with the 2001 Rams offense, and tell me who had more playmakers on that side of the ball. What matters is execution. The Patriots might not be favored against the Packers or Saints in the Super Bowl, but I’d bet neither team would relish the chance to face a Belichick coached team regardless of who the personnel is.

In a single game with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick I’ll take on any team in history and think we have a fighting chance. So the naysayers can continue to say  they “just don’t see it” but the naysayers just don’t see a lot of things. Championship teams don’t always fit into a perfect neat little box, where statistical dominance, playmakers and “peaking at the right time” coincide.

Football is the ultimate team sport, and I can guarantee that the 2011 Patriots will all be on the same page when January comes around. It will take a flawless game to beat them no matter how many passing yards you think you can rack up.

Lombardi: Wheeling-and-dealing Patriots will be must see on draft day

Lombardi: Wheeling-and-dealing Patriots will be must see on draft day Reiss already posted a link of this, but it’s too good not to pass along, as is everything Michael Lombardi writes about the Patriots. Here an interesting appetizer… With little more than a week until the draft, the Patriots understand their 33rd pick will be […]
