Evidence is mounting that the Patriots found a pretty solid player with the 73rd overall pick in last year’s draft. Ridley’s 5.1 yards per rush is 10th among the 56 running backs with at least 85 rushes. Ridley has been among the league’s most powerful runners, averaging 2.6 yards after contact per rush. That trails only Ben Tate, Isaac Redman and Donald Brown among running backs with at least 85 carries. However, Ridley was far more than just a niche power rusher, averaging a 20 yard run once every 17.4 carries. That was the seventh-best average among backs with at least 85 carries

Consider that the four teams that have allowed the most passing yards this season are the Packers, Patriots, New York Giants and New Orleans Saints, four division champions with a combined 50-14 record. Removing the blowout situations paints a clearer picture of the defense, an opportunistic unit that is willing to surrender yards (8.2 yards per attempt in 10-point games or less, 29th in NFL) in exchange for preventing the big play. Additionally, the Patriots defense has made some big plays of its own, tying for second in interceptions (23) and first in red-zone interceptions (six).

PatsPropaganda Flashback: Let’s talk about sacks… Patriots style follow-up edition

Here’s the link to our article from last off-season talking sacks. Totals are below. Worth noting never before have the Pats had two 10+ sack guys in the BB era. So will the storyline be more about coverage this off-season than pass rush?

  • 2001 – 41 (Super Bowl Champs) Hamilton – 7
  • 2002 – 34 (missed playoffs due to tie breaker) Seymour/McGinest – 5.5
  • 2003 – 41 (Super Bowl Champs) Vrabel – 9.5
  • 2004 – 45 (Super Bowl Champs) McGinest – 9.5
  • 2005 – 33 (Lost AFCDG) Colvin – 7.5
  • 2006 – 44 (Lost AFCCG) Warren – 7.5
  • 2007 – 47 (Lost Super Bowl) Vrabel – 12.5
  • 2008 – 31 (Missed playoffs due to tie breaker) Seymour – 8
  • 2009 – 31 (Lost AFCWCG) Banta-Cain – 10
  • 2010 – 36 (Lost AFCDG) Wright 5.5
  • 2011 – 40 (TBD) Carter/Anderson – 10

It Is What It Is » Pressure Points: Which New England defenders did the best job of getting after the quarterback this season?

We’ve written in the past that the measuring point of a decent season of sackage is 40 and for the first time since 2007 the Pats hit the mark this year.

According to official NFL gamebooks, opposing quarterbacks had 620 dropbacks against the Patriots this season, and were hit by New England defenders a total of 88 times, to go along with 40 sacks (14th in the league) for 274 yards.

Reiss also said the fact the Patriots didn’t beat a team this season with a better-than-.500 record doesn’t anything in the grand scheme of things.

“When that started to come out at the end of the regular season I’m thinking to myself, have we forgotten any context of what it means to play in the NFL?” Reiss said. “So the fact that they didn’t beat a team that finished the season with a better than .500 record is now significant? So you’re trying to tell me, that game when they go play the New York Jets, and most people are picking the Jets and some predicting it’s the end of the Patriots dynasty.

Now that game doesn’t mean anything because they finished 8-8? That’s ridiculous. “The NFL is all about when you play a team as much as who you play. So now you tell me in the playoffs that doesn’t matter? Sometimes I think we have too much time on our hands to dissect and analyze. It’s paralysis by analysis on a statistic like that.

“They won some games in some tough spots this year. The Denver Broncos had won six straight games when the Patriots were going into Denver, a place they’ve had trouble winning over the course of franchise history. And now you’re telling me that game doesn’t mean anything because the [Broncos] didn’t finish above .500? I find that stuff ridiculous.”

Argonauts GM on Armstead – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston Just what the hoodie ordered… What type of player are the Patriots getting? “They’re getting a 6-5, 280-pound active player who plays very smart. He plays with great leverage. He’s an above-average pass-rusher who plays the run well. He’s a solid all-around player, […]
