Behind Belichick’s demeanor is the belief that everything you need to know is something you can glean from watching a game. The actual outcome of play is enough to settle almost any debate, and those that can’t—arguments about clutchness, leadership, or poise—are hopelessly subjective. Perhaps this accounts for his sunniness this week, which is basically the football argument week. Every topic can be spun into endless comparisons and appeals to subjectivity. Appearing on NFL Network Thursday, NFL insider Michael Lombardi confirmed that the Patriots will place the franchise tag on Wes Welker if a long-term deal can’t be reached. “They’ve been trying all season to get a deal done,” said Lombardi, “but it hasn’t come to fruition yet. … They’re not going to lose Wes Welker. He’s going to be a part of their team.” The Pats would prefer to sign their leading receiver to a 2-3 year deal. The wide receiver franchise tag will drop from $11.5 million to roughly $9.4 million this year.

Based on film study, the NFL Network Playbook crew named New England’s Kyle Love as one of the most improved defensive tackles in the NFL in 2011. Their other picks were Geno Atkins and Isaac Sopoaga. Love, a 2010 undrafted free agent from Mississippi State, showed the ability to “hold two gaps” as a second-year starter, and showed up on tape as a “dirt dog,” blue-collar player with disciplined performance to make the Patriots’ defensive line a strength.
