The B.S. Report: 3/6 – Eric Mangini

March 7, 2012 by Mike Dussault

The B.S. Report: 3/6 – Eric Mangini

I’m sure a lot of Pats fans won’t want to listen to this but if I’ve gotten over my Mangini hatred so can you! I think people fail to recognize that Mangini’s insight into the Pats is the closest thing we’ll ever get to someone who has been there and really truly knows how things work in Foxboro.

This podcast with Simmons is loaded with great Patriots stuff. Plus there’s nothing I enjoy more than Simmons getting put in his place by a real football guy.

The most egregious example? When Simmons says how he was sure the Patriots were going to steamroll the Ravens in the AFCCG until he talked to Mangini who told him it would be close.

Was Simmons the only Patriots fan on the planet who thought the Pats would easily beat the Ravens? I think so.

Otherwise Mangini has some real insight into the Patriots way of operating, including an assessment of whether or not the Pats should get Mike Wallace, a move Simmons predictably thought was a slam dunk. Mangini points out, as we’ve pointed out numerous times when talking about Wallace,  the question is not if he’s a great player, the question is if he can process the Patriots offense. Can he line up in the no-huddle, read the defense and know exactly where Tom Brady wants him to be? Let’s not forget the Steelers run one of the most straight forward offenses in the NFL as well.

For those who can stomach it I highly recommend you check this podcast out. Mangini might just win you over.

Wherever Manning ends up it will never be the same rivalry, but I would enjoy getting to see him play against us with another team.

The final pass Peyton Manning ever threw against the Patriots as a Colt. A loss-sealing interception. What a nice bookend along with his early career performances.

Top 3 Patriots wins over Colt Peyton Manning

  1. 2003 AFCCG
  2. 2004 AFCDG
  3. 2003 Regular Season (Willie McGinest Goalline stop)

Worst 3 Patriots Losses to Colt Peyton Manning

  1. 2006 AFCCG
  2. 2009 4th & 2
  3. 2008 Regular Season (WE SHOULD HAVE BEAT THEM WITH CASSEL, DAMN YOU DAVID THOMAS AND YOUR HIT AFTER THE WHISTLE!!!!!)

Patriots draft notes: Wide Receivers and Cornerbacks edition

March 6, 2012 by Mike Dussault

We’re up to 30+ prospects on the 2012 Patriots-only big board but we had a couple thoughts to share. It’s hard to get too much into the draft and talk about needs before Free Agency, just like it’s hard to talk about Free Agency before all the Franchise Tags have been handed out.

Regardless, cornerback and wide receiver are two interesting groups with this draft class that I think bring up some questions when it comes to draft strategy.

Let’s start with the wide receivers. The Patriots have a need for an outside-the-numbers X receiver, which is a pretty hard player to find no matter what team you are. This year’s draft class features quite a few bigger receivers who aren’t exactly down-the-field burners, but are physical and have some savvy.

So the question it raises is if a guy like Michael Floyd or Mohamed Sanu would be appealing to the Patriots even without that 4.3 speed? Outside of their deep speed they look like solid fits. Let’s not forget the Patriots lack size and physicality at the receiver position as well as the proverbial “deep threat”.

I believe the Pats would and should seriously consider this type of receiver even though they might lack the deep speed to stretch the field vertically.

The advantage that large wide receivers can give you is that they’re a mismatch on small corners, especially if they’re left on an island. This ends up having the same result as a wide receiver who is a threat to get deep with his speed, instead here you’ve got to give your corner help with a safety because if you don’t you could be a quick wide receiver screen and a broken tackle away from a big gain.

There is more than one way to stretch a field, so I will not be ignoring this class of big, physical wide outs just because they lack deep speed in a year where everyone wants Mike Wallace or the draft equivalent.

As for cornerbacks I’ve seen a lot of mocks giving the Patriots Janoris Jenkins. Jenkins is undeniably intriguing from an on-the-field perspective but his off-the-field baggage has been well documented as well.

I don’t always write off a player immediately based on off-the-field stuff even though we are talking about the Patriots who have a penchant for what I call “football nerds”.

Regardless of whether Jenkins is a changed man who can fall in line in Foxboro or not, when I look at the rest of the corner class, especially the players ranked just below Jenkins there look to be some excellent Patriots prospects.

Stephon Gilmore, Chase Minnifield, Trumaine Johnson, and Jayron Hosely may all be slightly less talented than Jenkins, but all of them seem to me as safer choices who have the intangibles that they look for at the Football Academy in Foxboro.

With only a small drop off in talent, but a much safer off-the-field profile, there are plenty of corners in the 2nd and 3rd round for the Pats to choose from. I expect them to make the safe play, rather than take a risk on Jenkins.

The CHFF “Shiny Hood Ornament” theory elevated to Man Law | Cold Hard Football Facts

March 6, 2012 by Mike Dussault

The CHFF “Shiny Hood Ornament” theory elevated to Man Law | Cold Hard Football Facts

I find this article from last year an especially appropriate read, especially for those in the “Deep Threat or Death” campe.

ONE – Wide receivers, for all their eye-catching flash and dash, are little more than shiny ornaments on the hood of an NFL offense. Oh, sure, they’re nice to have. But they don’t necessarily make your offense any better – and they rarely if ever make your team any better.

TWO – You should add a flashy wide receiver only when all the other pieces of a great team are in place: a great driver (the quarterback), some sporty tires that provide plenty of traction (the offensive line and ground game), a powerful motor (the defense) and a great transmission (special teams) that allows you to change gears quickly and effectively.

THREE – Even the greatest receivers of all time can make a big impact only when all those pieces are in place, and even then the impact is largely overstated. Even the great Jerry Rice, for example, touched the ball just four to five times per game. So the impact of even the greatest at the position is minimal compared with the impact of a certain position that touches the ball on every offensive snap. And remember, Rice did not make the 49ers a great team. He was drafted by the 18-1 defending Super Bowl champ 49ers in 1985.

Mario is making is making so much money and I think New England is going to be cognizant of Vince Wilfork’s $8 million a year. I think that’s one thing that the Patriots have done a great job of – they don’t bring anybody in the locker room that makes more than some of their own players and they don’t cause that dissention amongst their own team,” he said. “I don’t see that. I don’t think they’re going to spend that much money on one specific player. I think you’re going to see a lot of different players come in here and rebuild the defensive front, rebuild their offense a little bit, change their offense.

Some interesting takes on the Pats/Mario Williams compiled by Mike Reiss. I found this quote from Michael Lombardi to be the take that I most agree with. As much as we’d all lover to see the Pats make a big splash to get a player of Williams talent we can’t forget that this team has always been built on mid-range free agents and draft picks, making them strong from player one to player fifty three.
