New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady restructured his contract last week, a league source confirmed on Wednesday. Signed to a four-year, $72 million contract extension on September 10, 2010, Brady was scheduled to earn $5.75 million in base salary with a $6 million roster bonus and $250,000 workout bonus this season. Under the restructure, Brady’s base salary was reduced to a fully guaranteed $950,000, with the leftover amount ($4.8 million) combined with the roster bonus and converted into a $10.8 million signing bonus that will be prorated over the three remaining years on Brady’s contract.

Unfortunate to lose Anderson but there’s no way the Pats were ponying up that much money for a player they likely valued as a DPR. I will say this for the Bills, I like what they’re doing. They’ve taken note of how teams like the Giants have beaten the Pats and they’re trying to follow that model of building up their defensive line with as many good pass rushers as they can pay.

It goes back to one of my favorite sayings “the road to the playoffs goes through the division”. If you’re not trying to build a roster to beat the team who has won the division 9 of the last 11 years what are you doing? I’m looking at you Jets.

The Patriots have lost defensive end Mark Anderson to the Bills, who signed the 28-year-old to a four-year deal and figure to use him as a pure pass-rusher. Anderson was able to parlay a big season with New England into a four-year deal with Buffalo worth $27.5 million, including $8 million guaranteed, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Thanks for the memories and lack of fumbles, Law Firm! Such a consummate Patriot. Came in as an undrafted rookie, worked his way slowly up the depth chart before breaking out in 2010 with a 1,000-yard rushing season.

He was never flashy but he got the job done by always getting positive yardage and never fumbling. His reliability will be missed.

Luckily the Pats have two high round picks from 2011 in Ridley and Vereen ready to hopefully step in. Don’t rule out the addition of a veteran running back or another rookie in April.

Must read for any NFL fan. Of course there will be countless discussions of how the punishment for Bountygate makes Spaygate look minor, though I’m sure there will be plenty of Pats-haters saying the NFL went easy on us for whatever reason.

But maybe, just maybe, this will give us a little more perspective that while Spygate was undoubtedly bad, the Patriots never went to the level of deception that the Saints did, and that the effect on the field and to the NFL brand was viewed as far worse for Bountygate.

Good signing by the Pats, he might be up there in age but if he can play in the slot and potentially some free safety he fits two needs. Might not make it out of camp, but Belichick had this to say about him in 2011:

“He’s been an important guy for [the Dolphins] and we didn’t see him in the first game. He’s done a good job for them, very experienced player with a lot of skills that you look for in a cornerback with his speed, quickness and experience obviously. He’s got a lot of playmaking ability.”
