Patriots trade up again and select Dont’a Hightower
What in the world is going on, two trade ups!??! For those of you who have been paying attention you know I didn’t see the Hightower fit for the Pats because he seemed too much like Spikes.
But there’s no question he’s a talented linebacker and I will be extremely curious to see how the Pats plan to use him. Whether it’s in a rotation at middle linebacker or even as an outside linebacker.
But just because yours truly didn’t see a fit doesn’t mean I’m not excited about it now. The fact is that the Patriots have improved their defense immensely in the last two hours. It’s pretty much everything a Pats fan could ask for.
There’s no question now, the Pats have one of the most talented young linebacking squads in the NFL now. I don’t know how it will all come together, but I can’t wait to find out.
“I’m gonna make a statement,” said Mayock. “Three years from now, I’m gonna say Chandler Jones is the best defensive player to come out of this draft.” Chimed in Lombardi, “I think what Mike Mayock said is right. He is the best defensive player in the draft.” Mayock recently bumped Jones to No. 9 overall in his top-100 rankings, and to No. 1 among defensive ends. Lombardi went so far as to suggest Jones could be a top-ten pick.

Well there’s two ways to look at this. One is the way that all us amateur draftniks who weren’t blown away by Jones, or there’s the Mike Mayock way, who said that he thinks in a couple years Jones will be the best defensive player from this draft class.
Jones will be used in a variety of ways, using his great size and athleticism to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball that is much needed.
Let’s just go with what Mayock said and allow ourselves to get really, really excited. The Patriots just traded UP and took a pass rusher! Wow.

We’ve re-signed some players from last year. We’ve added some players in free agency over the last month. So I think we have a pretty competitive team, and we’ll just have to see what happens tonight and see where we can add players to us that we feel will be the best both short- and long-term additions to our football team.
