Piecing together puzzle in secondary – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

I’m really enjoying Field Yates’ experienced football perspective on ESPN Boston. This is a good breakdown of what the Pats have in their secondary. Hard to project who’s going to be where, injuries and competition will sort that out, but you have to like the amount of versatility and potential that they have.

I like the white uniforms though they were cursed in 2009 with just the dreadful loss to the Broncos coming in them. Still I’d like to see more of them. And I’d also like to see the 90s throwbacks at some point as well.

Pats’ second effort pays off – BostonHerald.com

Interesting take here from Jeff Howe at his new Herald digs. I really see the sky as the limit for this defense with all the talent they’ve stockpiled, but there will he hard decisions to make. Obviously Mayo is part of the core and was given another contract. But after him who are the real building blocks that will also get another deal from the Pats?

There jury is still out on a lot of their young defenders, but after this year we’ll start to see who they want to build around and who they don’t.

Patriots – One opposing scout offers his take on the Patriots’ offseason moves – WEEI | Christopher Price

Good stuff in this article from Chris Price. Will Allen could really address the issues the Pats have had at slot corner over the past few seasons. It was better in 2011 (they were destroyed by #1 WRs) but Allen can do a number of things and that will make him extremely useful.

The [Will] Allen signing was a relatively under-the-radar pickup, but it appears that some around the league view the 33-year-old as a high-quality addition. He’s certainly developed a rep as a good slot corner in recent years – according to Pro Football Focus, he was in the slot for 419 snaps last season in Miami (tops in the league) and he yielded 0.81 yards per coverage snap for 3rd best in the league among slot corners. In addition, he allowed a catch once every 11.6 coverage snaps, a rate that was sixth best in the league at the position.

Super Bowls, you name it,” Brown began. “I was a part of quite a few unique games in Patriots history. You talk about the Snow Bowl against Oakland, the tuck rule. The overtime game against the Dolphins (in 2003 when Brown caught an 82-yard pass for the win) and obviously the Super Bowl games we had. Even back into 1996, that last game we had against the Giants to get home-field advantage (a game in which the Pats trailed 22-0 before Brown preserved a drive with a third-down catch while lying on his back). There’s so many special moments. It’s hard to put my finger on just one. Maybe the 2006 game against the San Diego Chargers being able to get the ball back from Marlon McCree. Go with that one.

I realize now how much the fans really did appreciate what I was doing with the organization,” said Brown in a conference call with reporters. “I always played hard for my teammates … I really wanted to go out there and make our fans happy.
