Final OTA observations – Extra Points – Boston.com

Final OTA observations – Extra Points – Boston.com

Must-read nuggets from Bedard. Click and read, but here’s my favorite two…

First-round pick Dont’a Hightower saw his role expand a little bit more in this practice. He had been solely at middle linebacker in previous practice but ventured out to other LB positions during practice. Hightower also appeared to be much more comfortable with what he was doing, so he played a little bit faster. Seems to be rounding into shape.

And also…

Two rookies, Tavon Wilson and Alfonzo Dennard, stood out in the secondary with a few pass breakups each. Seems that the rookies are starting to catch on.

A league source tells PFT that the Patriots and Gronkowski have reached agreement on a contract that would replace the final two seasons of his rookie deal. A second-round pick in 2010, Gronkowski is due to earn $540,000 in 2012 and $575,000 in 2013.

Not really sure yet what to make of this other than it looks like the Pats wanted to give Gronk a raise. Of course there are sure to be more details to come, including his agent Drew Rosenhaus acknowledging there really is a new deal.

Would’ve been better to extend him now but that’s even less the Pats style than giving him an unnecessary raise. Either way, let’s hope it keeps the Gronk happy, and the show of good will pays dividends when it comes time to give him another contract, which will surely be a monster deal to fit the monster Gronk.

Sterling Moore came out of nowhere to play a pivotal role for the Patriots during the 2011 postseason. He remains an under-the-radar player now, and I continue to be impressed with technique and ability to leverage opponents. He plays with good bend and flexibility, and seems to have solid fundamentals to his game.

Of course I’m rooting for Sterling Moore, he came on the PatsProp & Frenz podcast!

After unsuccessfully trying to trade WR Chad Ochocinco throughout the day Thursday, the Patriots are releasing him, per league source.

Adam Schefter

And there it is. Nothing much to say about it really. He couldn’t get it and the Pats are well prepared to move on without him or what they might’ve hoped he could contribute. Thanks for trying, Chad. Now all I feel is a sense of relief the Ochocinco circus has left Foxboro.

Offseason pickup Bobby Carpenter continues to see reps with the first team defense, with Rob Ninkovich continuing to practice with the defensive linemen.

Very curious as to where Carpenter is playing, probably SLB or MLB with Spikes out and Ninkovich playing DE now.
