Patriots > The Curve.
When all is said and done, wouldn’t be surprised if Joseph Addai is one of the Patriots’ best signings in free agency this year (contract here). Hearing positive things about Addai in recent weeks as the fit seems right – a low-key, versatile, mentor-type professional to pair with younger backs Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen, as well as Danny Woodhead.

It’s no secret that the New England Patriots have one of the most complex and intricate passing games in the NFL. Even when they’re running things that look pretty standard, like three-vertical schemes and 2-TE sets (which they obviously do better than anybody else). Tom Brady is master and commander of an offense that has a dizzying array of option routes. Brady has to be in perfect sync with his receivers as a result, and those receivers must be aware of every permutation in the “if this/then that” aspects of the passing game.

Beyond Ridley, Vereen will likely compete with the versatile Danny Woodhead and veteran offseason pick-up Joseph Addai. Despite that fact, Vereen isn’t missing the opportunity to learn from the 29-year old Addai, who comes to New England after six years in Indianapolis where he contributed in a number of ways for the Colts. “Joe’s a real good dude. He’s been around the league for a while, so you can learn stuff from him on the field as well as off the field,” Vereen said. “We’ve just reached the starting point of everything that I’m able to learn from him. I’ve only been around him for a couple weeks now. The more I’m around him, the more I’m sure the whole running back group will learn.”

Is anyone else secretly concerned that Joseph Addai was just sent here to destroy us from within? Or have I just been reading too much Game of Thrones?

My depth chart of the guys they list:
1. Vollmer – can’t understate the value of keeping Brady upright in his twilight years.
2. Patrick Chung – he needs to stay healthy, but is a great locker room presence and our only somewhat-proven starting safety.
3. Brandon Spikes – I think the combo of him, Mayo and Hightower is going to be a deadly trio. But as of yet I don’t think the Pats need to break the bank for him.
4. Aaron Hernandez – I love Hernando, and he’s vesatile, but I think he’s going to think he’s worth a little more than the Pats are willing to offer.
5. Devin McCourty – Nobodies going to be giving McCourty a lucrative free agent offer after 2011. He needs to bounce back this year and then his stock could rise as far as number three, still behind Vollmer and Chung.

This video really breaks down just how hard it is to stop Gonk and Hernando.
