It’s no secret that the New England Patriots have one of the most complex and intricate passing games in the NFL. Even when they’re running things that look pretty standard, like three-vertical schemes and 2-TE sets (which they obviously do better than anybody else). Tom Brady is master and commander of an offense that has a dizzying array of option routes. Brady has to be in perfect sync with his receivers as a result, and those receivers must be aware of every permutation in the “if this/then that” aspects of the passing game.

Beyond Ridley, Vereen will likely compete with the versatile Danny Woodhead and veteran offseason pick-up Joseph Addai. Despite that fact, Vereen isn’t missing the opportunity to learn from the 29-year old Addai, who comes to New England after six years in Indianapolis where he contributed in a number of ways for the Colts. “Joe’s a real good dude. He’s been around the league for a while, so you can learn stuff from him on the field as well as off the field,” Vereen said. “We’ve just reached the starting point of everything that I’m able to learn from him. I’ve only been around him for a couple weeks now. The more I’m around him, the more I’m sure the whole running back group will learn.”

Is anyone else secretly concerned that Joseph Addai was just sent here to destroy us from within? Or have I just been reading too much Game of Thrones?

It Is What It Is » Who will be the next under-30 Patriot to get a new contract?

It Is What It Is » Who will be the next under-30 Patriot to get a new contract?

My depth chart of the guys they list:

1. Vollmer – can’t understate the value of keeping Brady upright in his twilight years.

2. Patrick Chung – he needs to stay healthy, but is a great locker room presence and our only somewhat-proven starting safety.

3. Brandon Spikes – I think the combo of him, Mayo and Hightower is going to be a deadly trio. But as of yet I don’t think the Pats need to break the bank for him.

4. Aaron Hernandez – I love Hernando, and he’s vesatile, but I think he’s going to think he’s worth a little more than the Pats are willing to offer.

5. Devin McCourty – Nobodies going to be giving McCourty a lucrative free agent offer after 2011. He needs to bounce back this year and then his stock could rise as far as number three, still behind Vollmer and Chung.

NFL Videos: Defending two-TE sets

This video really breaks down just how hard it is to stop Gonk and Hernando.

The Pats face a decision in 2016, at which time a $10 million option bonus comes due. If the Patriots pick up the option (factors will include whether Tom Brady is still the quarterback, and whether Bill Belichick is still the head coach, and whether Gronkowski is still playing at a high level), the final four years include salaries of $8 million in 2018 and $9 million in 2019.

Young Patriots defense must learn to close out the close ones

If Sunday night’s Patriots loss to the Ravens felt familiar there’s good reason. Since the start of the 2011 season the Patriots have been in 10 games that were decided by one score or less, and in those games their record is 4-6, with the majority of the six losses being decided on the final […]
