Spikes looks like he should be a really good player, and if Hightower also performs up to his potential, it’d be in the Patriots’ best interest to keep Jerod Mayo, Spikes and Hightower on the field as much as possible. Hightower might be versatile enough to play on the strong side in the 4-3, on the edge in the 3-4 and alongside Mayo or in a three-point stance in nickel packages. If that comes to fruition, Hightower and Spikes should be able to play alongside one another for more than just the next two years.

Gostkowski was asked about Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff’s miss that sent the Patriots to the Super Bowl, and said, “I was excited that we won, and that we were going to the Super Bowl, but at the same time, I would have rather been able to kick our team into it than see someone [miss], but it’s part of the game. I think across the board, these guys are hungry. A lot of the younger guys just want a chance, and they’ll do everything they can to make the most of that chance,” he added. “Specifically, in regards to the offensive linemen, it’s a group of real hardworking guys.
