Pass rusher Carter just one vet coming off injury who may be a steal – NFL – CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy

Carter was seen in Foxboro last week, let’s hope the Pats bring him back, eventhough their bases are covered if they don’t.

Now, a little more than a month before the start of training camp, Carter’s hard work is paying off again. With the free-agent market largely already picked clean, Carter is nearing a return – he vows to be ready by camp – and he is one of a handful of players who may have fallen off the overall NFL radar, but who are being monitored closely by executives.

“It would be great, it would be great,” Carter said of a potential New England reunion. “But as you know it’s a business as well. I’m just training my mind and body to prepare for another season, and hopefully a team will be interested in me and take a chance and I can go out and perform the best way I can. If it’s New England, that would be awesome.”

We saw more evidence of how polished WR Brandon Lloyd is when he did a terrific job showing late hands on a 7-on-7 pass from Tom Brady. CB Malcolm Williams was in perfect underneath position but didn’t get his hands up in time because Lloyd didn’t catch the ball until the last second. Reminiscent of Randy Moss. Brady and Lloyd go just about everywhere together on the field between drills.

Good luck dealing with this tandem this year, NFL.

As always, must read nuggets from Bedard. Should be interesting to watch Hoyer and Mallet this preseason. Here’s some notes on Mallet from today…

Mallett finished 7 of 15. He’s inconsistent. He threw a beautiful bomb to Julian Edelman for a touchdown over Alfonzo Dennard and Tavon Wilson, but Mallett also showed his trademark wildness with low throws and a few behind receivers. Mallett should have been intercepted by Sterling Moore. It appears the footwork drills he’s working on is affecting the consistency of his mechanics. It can be straightened out. Mallett also seems to be very cognizant of getting rid of the ball in practice. He had about four throwaways. Mallett often held onto the ball too long in the preseason last year. Quicker decision-making appears to be a coaching point this offseason, as it should be.

Hmmm, wondering if BB’s non-denominational look is due to the Reebok-Nike switch. Like he’s still waiting for Nike to send him a satisfactory hoodie that he’s willing to saw the arms off of.

Observations from Tuesday practice – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Observations from Tuesday practice – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Couple nuggets of note from Field Yates:

Without the pads on, it’s hard to accurately gauge a receiver’s ability to separate, but Brandon Lloyd continues to display steady hands.

Rookie cornerback Alfonzo Dennard made another pass-breakup this afternoon, dislodging a pass thrown down the sideline for Jabar Gaffney. That’s the second consecutive on-field session that he’s flashed ball skills.

At this point it’s futile to try and project where Dennard could fit in, but the last couple practices leave me feeling positive he could make an impact this year.

My best guesstimate how the Pats might want things to work out in the secondary?

Dowling and McCourty on the outside, with Arrington playing a significant role in the slot. Chung at safety with Gregory and Allen rotating in various roles. After that it could come down to Dennard and Sterling Moore for that final spot, but that’s the role Edelman was in at times last year and clearly one that needs to be improved.

I don’t think we give Wes Welker enough credit. He signed his Franchise Tender on time, hasn’t missed any camps, and looks like he’s ready to dominate another season. It’s easy for those in the media to cry for the players who get franchised. “He needs a long term deal! Where’s his security!”.

Well it sure has been nice for Wes to keep it in perspective that he’s going to get $9.5 million dollars this year! How many regular people even see a fraction of that in their lifetime? Clearly Wes remembers his small town roots, and hasn’t taken to the pulpit of “poor old me, if my career ends this season I have to figure out how to squeak by!”.

I love Wes and would like nothing more than to continue rooting him on as a Patriot and his dedication to the team has only endeared him more to me.

Wes Welker on not having a long-term deal: “I’m not worried about that at all. I’m here and I’m happy.”
