After drafting Dont’a Hightower in the first round, some suggested he’d find his way on the field in sub situations as an edge rusher. Hightower did some of that in college, but also held coverage responsibilities as one of the leaders of the Alabama defense. He flashed the ability to drop into coverage and break on the ball today, and we’ll continue to monitor his work in space. If he can play on all three downs as a linebacker, that would give the Patriots added versatility on their defense.

Brady and the Patriots are not letting up. They want to improve. They want to get better. They want to be near perfect by the time the regular season begins. Want proof? On a soggy, rainy day at Gillette Stadium, Patriots coach Bill Belichick practiced outside. The Jets had a similar dilemma on Tuesday and chose to practice inside the fieldhouse.

Tom Brady: Behind the scenes with a super fan

First of all, there aren’t any unwrittens. … You can’t negotiate a contract, release him, and then re-negotiate another contract with him that was already done in advance. I’m sure the Giants weren’t doing that. So the player is on waivers, he’s on waivers – ours or anybody else’s. I don’t know what unwrittens you’re talking about. … Any time you put a player on waivers, you know there are 31 teams out there that can take him if they want him. We all know that. There is no secrets about that.

Just asking Belichick of all people about unwritten rules is pretty hilarious.

Some nuggets from the beat writers I found interesting today…
Cunningham, Bolden, Gronk, Slater, Vollmer, Mankins, Pryor, White and Spikes make up rehabbing group today.

Good day for Branch, Edelman, Hightower, Gaffney, Lloyd. Tough day for Hoyer.

Wilfork left practice early. Not sure why. Welker appeared to tweak right leg at end. Dennard hurt left leg. Moore tweaked right leg.

As you can imagine I really feel terrible about hurting the Giants feelings. You’ve beaten us three straight times, two of which in Super Bowls, and you think we’re going to just let your best tight end pass by us in the night? BB don’t play that. Especially since the Pats are one of the few teams who actually compete with a long-term vision.
The Giants might’ve won the first two Super Bowls we’ve faced them, but we’re still just one Lombardi away from epic greatness unseen before by a coach/quarterback combination. We’re not done yet!
