Minicamp observations, Day 2 – Extra Points – Boston.com
Bedard’s nuggets, click it out. He keeps bringing up Justin Francis as a defensive player to watch. I’ll be curious to get a good look at him in the preseason, but Bedard seems high on him, and I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt it’s not just because they share Rutgers as their alma mater.
Interesting piece below, not much room for error in the secondary, especially if you’re not making plays.
The most significant personnel change – and, again, it’s early so it probably doesn’t mean anything – was that Sterling Moore took all of Dowling’s snaps in nickel defense. Guessing the Patriots continue to like Moore’s ball skills. Dowling hasn’t really made any plays. Also interesting to note, after playing left cornerback for the first time on Tuesday, Dowling received even more reps (if not more) on the left side. As a rookie, he was only a right cornerback. Could be preparation for Devin McCourty to do some safety work down the road if Dowling proves ready to take on more.
He’s got a unique skill set so it’s going to take some time to get used to things that he does really well. We haven’t had anyone quite like him, so just to understand where he likes the ball placed and how he gets open. He’s a very good player, so we’ve got a lot of work ahead in training camp and we’re going to have to use every single practice and every rep really wisely, because he can be a big part of this offense if we can really get up to speed.

After drafting Dont’a Hightower in the first round, some suggested he’d find his way on the field in sub situations as an edge rusher. Hightower did some of that in college, but also held coverage responsibilities as one of the leaders of the Alabama defense. He flashed the ability to drop into coverage and break on the ball today, and we’ll continue to monitor his work in space. If he can play on all three downs as a linebacker, that would give the Patriots added versatility on their defense.

I feel like teams that have been together, that have veteran leadership and have veteran players, that have been there and know how to work (will have an advantage),” Bodden said. “I’m sure a coach like Bill (Belichick), is prepared for this lockout and knows what he wants to do when he gets there. He’ll […]
