The Patriots’ re-signing of safety James Ihedigbo appears to be another sign that the coaching staff would prefer to keep Devin McCourty at cornerback. That’s where McCourty was exclusively in offseason practices attended by media members. While McCourty played safety in sub packages late last season and in the playoffs, it looks like that move was more a result of a safety shortage than a real desire to move McCourty.

Same goes for Guyton, whom the Patriots made no effort to re-sign. After being a vital role player and spot starter his previous three seasons, the 2008 undrafted free agent disappeared in 2011. Guyton barely saw the field outside of injury/backup situations. Why? After the lockout, Guyton appeared to report in subpar shape. The quickness and athletic ability that made him the team’s best cover linebacker was gone. That was confirmed when the Dolphins signed him to a minimum one-year deal. They are in the process of getting Guyton’s conditioning and body composition back to previous levels. “The ability he showed on film in 2011 was not what it was prior, in ’09 and ’10,’’ the source said. “He’s aware of that.’’

We’re talking about Bill Belichick here, who, he’s very, very smart in terms of using his players and his personnel to the best of his ability. And I just presented myself with an opportunity. I always believe that opportunity is the key to life. He gave me an opportunity and was like, ‘You’re the guy, and do with it what you wish.’ I just continued to excel with the guys around – Patrick Chung, he’s been in the system and understands it very well and Devin McCourty, and just the guys across the board. Like I said, he’s a great coach, and I’m excited to be back and excited to work towards the number one goal.

Patriots re-sign safety James Ihedigbo – Extra Points – Boston.com

This year’s Patriots training camp is going to be an epic thunderdome battle at so many spots. I don’t envy the coaching staff’s task of cutting down the roster, though I’m sure injuries will make it easier in some spots unfortunately. At least they’re prepared to deal with them no matter where they strike (cough except defensive tackle…)

Basically, beyond Chung, Gregory and Wilson, it’s wide open for one, possibly two spots. Barrett is the better athlete and more versatile, but will he breakthrough this season?

Why do you think belichick has had so much success against manning

Peyton’s definitely gotten his shots in too. ‘05, ’06 x2, ’09, ’10. But I think it comes down to the how much talent was in the secondary. No question, this is the Pats best secondary since 2004, which is impressive. But this game was a lot about the elements and how the game unfolded. Manning […]
