Call it a dynasty? The Patriots have won the Ultimate Rookie Challenge at the rookie symposium for the third time in the last four seminars. Every rookie was expected to attend last week’s symposium, and the Patriots took home the quiz-show crown once again. They also won in 2008 and 2009 (the 2011 symposium was cancelled due to the lockout), and each rookie received an iPad as a prize.

One player who received a lot of playing time during the offseason practices for the Patriots was former Cowboys, Dolphins, and Lions linebacker Bobby Carpenter. It didn’t hurt his cause that Brandon Spikes has been out since having offseason knee surgery, but they don’t play the same position. Spikes is a middle linebacker for the Patriots, while Carpenter can play both outside spots in a 4-3. Jerod Mayo is the weak-side linebacker, so that means Carpenter is in the mix on the strong side. Expect first-round pick Dont’a Hightower to have a say in that at some point. At the least, Carpenter is going to play a large role in coverage. He’s the only legitimate cover linebacker the Patriots have after Gary Guyton departed.

I have two issues with this quote from Bedard.

1. When was Guyton ever “legitimate”?

2. What about Dane Fletcher?

Otherwise I remember everyone clamoring for Carpenter when he came out in 2006. That was about the time the Pats defense was officially “old and slow” and needed a youth infusion at linebacker. Not sure if the Pats can suddenly now make Carpenter into something special, but it looks like he’ll have a chance until we start getting healthy.

My job right now, with me being a rookie, is to be a sponge. Learn everything that coaches ask me to learn, and getting respect from the veterans. That’s my number one goal right now. That’s what I’m working on, my number one task.

I get a big kick out of the perception publicly – all the media, and mostly the fans, because they don’t see [and] he doesn’t give you much. He’s not there to draw attention to himself. But if you get in a social situation around Bill, he’s got so much personality. He’s interesting. He’s funny. He’s a great friend. I can’t respect our relationship more than I do. He’s about as good a friend as you can expect to have. … If you go to dinner, you’re going to talk about a lot of subjects. It’s real apparent that Bill has no ego. He’s not there to impress you on his championships. He’s just sharing and asking. He shares with guys he knows are interested. It’s like going to graduate school times 100.
