What will the Brady-to-Gronk combo do in 2012?

I don’t envy opposing defensive coordinators this year. There will be no simple solution to the well balanced foursome of Gronk, Hernando, Welker and Lloyd. Teams better have a plan for Gronk first and foremost because you can’t manufacture a scheme to stop him, you must get the players who can physically match up on him in the off-season.

What teams do on Gronk should be one of the most interesting X and O factors in 2012, especially in the red zone. It might be hard for Gronk to put up the same amount of touchdowns but whether he’s catching them or someone else is, it still means he’ll be a big problem that needs to be addressed.

In years past, treading between the numbers was a danger zone for receivers, who expected to be re-routed if they tried to run a crossing pattern or to take a potentially concussive hit once they caught the ball. With officials being more cognizant of penalizing helmet-to-helmet hits, players have backed off, making the middle of the field a far safer place to play.

For proof, look at the New England Patriots. Wes Welker, Gronkowski and Hernandez work the middle of the field like an Etch A Sketch. They exploit matchups, talent and rules arguably better than any team in the league – especially with a pinpoint passer in Tom Brady.

Yes, he is the best cornerback in the league,” said Woody, who played with Revis from 2008-10. “Maybe I’m biased, but what separates Revis … is his versatility, and being a student of the game. This guy understands his position. “He’s meticulous with how he studies the opponent, how the opponent will attack you. You […]
