Practice rundown #6 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Practice rundown #6 – Extra Points – Boston.com

Three nuggets from Bedard that I found most interesting:

CB Ras-I Dowling is starting to make strides on a consistent basis. Physically he looks better than he did in the off-season practices, and he’s doing a solid job in coverage.

Bolden continues to get more running attempts than Shane Vereen.

Dont’a Hightower looks like a natural at the strong-side linebacker position. He consistently holds his own against tight ends and tackles at the point of attack. Hightower has been the most physical player in camp. He absolutely stopped FB Spencer Larsen in his tracks on a running play. Completely stood Larsen up. He has also shown better instincts in coverage than previously thought.

Patriots Training Camp – Notes from Wednesday | NEPatriotsDraft.com – 2013 NFL Draft

Jermaine Cunningham continues to show off a second gear out there that I haven’t seen in the past. He’s playing like he’s got about ten guys chasing after him, which he kind of does.

Offensive tackle Nate Solder kick started what became a large fracas between the offense and defense when he shoved linebacker Brandon Spikes, who was already on the ground, after the whistle during an 11-on-11 play. But that wasn’t the only reason Solder caught some eyes on Wednesday night: he showed a greater level of physicality than what was witnessed last season. Solder plays with excellent bend in his stance, allowing him to fire out at the snap, play with body control when he engages defenders, and exert power in his blocks. He moved well to the second level in the running game, knocking over linebackers on multiple occasions.

Tweets of note from Wednesday’s in-stadium Patriots practice

August 2, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Great turnout – 22,633 fans on hand for tonight’s in-stadium #patscamp practice.

— New England Patriots (@Patriots) August 2, 2012

Donald Thomas continues to see increased reps w No. 1 o-line at guard.

— Christopher Price (@capeleaguer) August 2, 2012

Great crowd tonight, most of which sat in lower bowl of stadium. No Brandon Lloyd, Jonathan Fanene, Will Allen or Dan Connolly.

— Mike Reiss (@MikeReiss) August 2, 2012

Nearly a full-team fight on the field after Solder and Spikes threw down during goal-line drills. Lotta angry people for that one.

Gronkowski is a little bit up and down with his play and doesn’t look quite right physically, but he showed some of his blocking flare when he manhandled Scott on a running play.

Well let’s balance out that last observation that Gronk was a 100% with this one that has him still finding his footing post-Gronkle. Either way I expect Gronk should be back to himself by the time the bullets are real.

Rob Gronkowski looks about 100% from this view, and was tantalizing in beating double coverage near the goal line for an easy score… Partner in crime Aaron Hernanez was once again a nightmare to cover, slipping past and around defenders… Kyle Arrington got physical again in one-on-ones. Although not the biggest guy, he plays big… Brandon Bolden has a nose for the end zone… Patrick Chung has had durability issues throughout his career, but he’s not afraid to play physical and throw his body around… One note that is a continuation thought from previous practices: some players have a nose for defending screen passes. Former Patriots Mike Vrabel and Tedy Bruschi did. It looks like top draft choice Dont’a Hightower does too.

Throwbacks and shutout! The Patriots defeat the Lions in week 5

In the throwback red uniforms Bailey Zappe may have handed the ball off to the beast that is Rhamondre Stevenson plenty of times, but he also attempted 21 throws, with 17 completions for 188 yards, and… one touchdown.  Right now there is plenty to still nibble at that lower lip in concern for over the […]
