The Patriots’ first defensive unit in 11-on-11s included Rob Ninkovich, Kyle Love, Vince Wilfork, Chandler Jones, Bobby Carpenter, Dont’a Hightower, Jerod Mayo, Devin McCourty, Kyle Arrington, Patrick Chung and Steve Gregory.

Alright, I’m just going to say it, I’ll be surprised if Bobby Carpenter doesn’t make the team and contribute on defense. It’s clear that Brandon Spikes is again battling an injury and it would seem that Carpenter is a more versatile fit with Hightower than Dane Fletcher is. At least at this point.

Tweets of note from Tuesday’s Patriots-Saints joint practice

Hernandez 1-handed catch on 50 yd bomb from. Brady.1-on-1 drills patently unfair w these 2 QBs

— Scott Hanson (@ScottHanson) August 7, 2012

#Patriots rookie DE Chandler Jones is a well-times batted pass against #Saints QB Drew Brees in team drills.

— James Walker (@JamesWalkerESPN) August 7, 2012

Brees picked by Gregory in 11 on 11s. Nice INT.

— Christopher Price (@cpriceNFL) August 7, 2012

Not a good practice overall for the Patriots. Were good until team drills, and then Saints won the day.

— Greg A. Bedard (@GregABedard) August 7, 2012

Patriots offensive line had a rough day.

— Greg A. Bedard (@GregABedard) August 7, 2012

General feeling is that Bill Belichick will find a lot of teaching moments from this practice tape. Patriots’ offense looked sloppy.

Brandon Lloyd in 85 is growing on me, still would prefer 88 though…

AUDIO: WEEI – Greg Bedard: Pats are loaded offensively and are going to be a juggernaut

Classic Dennis… sets up this whole Patriots offense as how great the personnel is, then ends with the question “tell us why Tom Brady and the offense might NOT have a record setting year”. Because that’s what Pats fans want to know right? Yeah it all looks good on paper but can you please take a big dump all over that? At least Bedard gives them a “I don’t see a reason why” response.

I think what’s clear to me now is that I need to re-edit any Patriots-related Dennis-Callahan interviews and just take out Dennis-Callahan. They. Are. The. Worst.

But good stuff from Bedard… Most interesting undermentioned point? Can Ridley (or anyone else) get those tough short yards that Law Firm was so adept at?

Which former Patriot player will have the best season in 2012? :All Things Pats

Great different perspective here. Of all these guys it’s hard to root for anyone in the division especially with Mark Anderson coming for Brady, but you can’t help but wish nothing but the best the the Law Firm, and Randy Moss was a special player who will always have a special place in my heart.

Offseason moves help Bills address needs on D to close gap on Patriots – NFL – CBSSports.com

Offseason moves help Bills address needs on D to close gap on Patriots – NFL – CBSSports.com

Interesting read on the Bills. I have to say I respect how they’re going about things to come after us. There’s no secret to what works best against the Pats. GET PRESSURE WITH FOUR. Not all teams can do that, but those who can, or are for that particular game when the o-line was off, can stifle Brady and the offense.

The Pats are well aware of this as well, and if one of the young running backs can become a deadly weapon it will certainly help take some of the pressure off of Brady.

There’s no question with Brandon Lloyd in the mix the Patriots will present challenges all over the field for the defenses they face, in a way they never have before.

“The Patriots are the team we’re all chasing,” Wannstedt said. “That’s obvious. With the philosophy that we’re going to use, I see the whole blitz-zone, the zone-dog stuff, and I don’t know how many quarterbacks are getting fooled anymore. I’m watching tape, and I’m not so sure the way to go isn’t being able to make the quarterback get the ball out of his hands quick and put steady pressure on him. "The great ones aren’t going to take sacks, and that gives you an ability to do things coverage wise. I remember sitting there watching the Super Bowl, and I’m watching the Giants. I don’t know how many times they sacked Brady, but I do know the ball was coming out fast.”

Like almost every other team, I think the Patriots hit a rough patch in the draft from 2006-2008. I think they have since come back very strong. The Gronkowski/Hernandez picks are game-changers. In the end, I think Bill Belichick has been overseeing a transition from an older team in 2007, and to turn it over and still win consistently, it is an impressive thing to see.
