S Patrick Chung was by far the Patriots’ best defender on the field against the Saints. He was terrific in coverage (even against TE Jimmy Graham), provided strong run support and looked sure in his assignments. Chung has had a terrific camp to this point. The hope now is that he stays healthy and delivers during a contract year.

Practice rundown #11 – Saints – Extra Points – Boston.com

Good news on Patchung! Maybe I’ll have to start switching my allegiances back to him as my favorite player from Spikes since Spikes has been MIA yet again. Or maybe we’ll just go with Hightower and start anew? Picking favorites is so tough to do.

Camp Observations: Day 13 – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Two great nuggets (and it was hard to pick just two):

Wilson blitzes. Second-round safety Tavon Wilson has shown a knack for a unique skill throughout training camp: blitzing. He has impressive timing, a skill that usually derives from strong instincts. He’s also shown himself to be a forceful player, which could translate into sacks this season.

Moore’s ball skills stand out. Hard not to take notice of Sterling Moore’s consistent ball skills. He gets his hands on a number of passes, including an end zone deflection today that somehow ended to drop into the hands of Saints receiver Joshua Morgan’s hands (Morgan had actually dropped to the ground). Tough break for Moore, but he continues to dislodge balls and force incompletions. From this vantage point, he’s shown tremendous timing on his break-ups, and finishes every play. Defensive backs know that no ball is secure until the play is over, and Moore is persistent in his defense.

It would really be annoying to have to play the Saints in the Super Bowl in New Orleans this year.

New England Patriots Mailbag — Early results are in – ESPN Boston

Another guy to keep an eye on tonight. Back before camp started and my expectations for Chandler Jones were somewhere between “bust” and “red shirt year” I thought Scott would be a major player this season. I still think he could be valuable in a designated pass rusher role, but we’ll have to see how he looks tomorrow.

Q. Mike, who do you think needs to step up in the preseason games to make the roster? – JoeFla (Orlando, Fla.)

A. Joe, one player who comes to mind is fifth-year defensive end Trevor Scott. He looked like a sure bet to be on the first-unit at left defensive end, but a few things have happened since the early part of camp that have altered the picture: 1. First-round pick Chandler Jones is getting more time at right defensive end; 2. Rookie free agent Justin Francis seemingly has made a strong bid for a roster spot; 3. Scott’s own performance has appeared to slip in 1-on-1 rush drills. So I’m interested to watch him in the preseason to see if he can recapture some of the pass-rushing spark that he had early in his career.

Jermaine Cunningham took a few snaps lined up between the guard and center. That’s a new position for him. It’s possible the Patriots could employ him there in certain pass-rush packages.

Hitting again on the theme of the whole off-season… finding a way to get pressure up the middle by any means necessary.

I don’t want to say I’m amazed, because that’s too strong of a word, but it’s what I expect,” Esiason said. “You have one of the greatest quarterbacks that ever played, playing with young guys who have no idea what they’re doing out there, and he has to react to that and coach them on […]
