At one point, the offense was so bad that Jerod Mayo openly mocked them by asking for the punt team on third down. Later, Brady – who was 13 of 23 with five sacks in team periods – just shrugged at offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Look, in the long term we’re still operating under the assumption that Vollmer and Waters are back and all these offensive line problems will be things of the past. So let’s just spin this positively and say…

Camp Observations: Day 22 – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Pointing out a couple guys who haven’t gotten much mention around these parts:

Continue to notice a quick first step from defensive tackle Marcus Harrison, which helped him win in a couple of 1-on-1 situations.

Marcus Forston, the undrafted rookie defensive lineman from Miami, had a massive backfield stuff of his own.

Between these two guys and Justin Francis I think we’ll see at least one of them make the roster.

I mean, I’m pretty strong. I’ve always been pretty strong, so I think that tight ends, I’ve been able to handle them pretty well; tackles, you know, both of them at the same time, I should be alright,” he continued. “I’ve been doing it for a long time, and it’s just something that you work on. You get your techniques right, you get your hand placement right, and especially in that position, it’s more about technique and leverage then it is just brute strength.

Ninkovich’s role comes into focus – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Therein lies the biggest question, can Ninkovich hold up against a tight end and a tackle at the point of attack? It will certainly be interesting to watch.

Bill Belichick Press Conference Transcript

Bill Belichick Press Conference Transcript

Interesting comments here from BB on kickoff returns. One of the more surprising non-moves of the off-season was not bringing in a kick off returner.

Q: On the kickoff returns, what did the statistics show you last year in terms of the ball being moved up? Was the number of returns dramatically reduced? What are your thoughts on how that affects the value of the returner?

BB: The number of returns was down and there was a higher percentage of those [touchbacks] earlier in the year than later in the year when the weather wasn’t as warm, conditions weren’t quite as favorable, then percentage-wise there were more balls returned but still less than in the past. We didn’t return them very well in any conditions at any time and still haven’t based on the New Orleans game. That’s obviously an area that we can improve in, that we have worked hard in but based on the results still need to do a lot more work on. Important area in the game, it’s a big momentum play, it’s a way of answering the opponent’s score or start of the half, whatever the situation is there. It’s a big play in the game and an important play so we put a lot of stock in that just like we do every other play.

Patriots Notebook: Chandler Jones gaining confidence – CBSSports.com

Patriots Notebook: Chandler Jones gaining confidence – CBSSports.com As Jones fielded questions Friday, he stood at his locker without a shirt on. Sensing an opportunity to dig into the rookie, Tom Brady shot across the room and let him have it. “Jeez, Chandler. Put a shirt on,” Brady shouted. “Seriously, you’re going to get (strength […]
