Hernandez $41.1m extension shows Patriots are evolving – The Boston Globe

Hernandez $41.1m extension shows Patriots are evolving – The Boston Globe

Great read, you really have to feel good for Hernando, who seemed genuinely emotional over the contract extension. And yes, it’s a good sign that the Pats are starting to not squeeze every last drop out of every player they have before giving them a new contract.

But now, after Hernandez’s deal, we can officially say the Patriots have moved into the 21st century as far as salary-cap management. Their propensity to take players to the end of their deals, then engage in verbal combat when it came time for a new one, not only dragged on the players but it kept the Patriots from using all the possible advantages under a salary cap. It long has been one of the most glaring, perplexing weaknesses of an organization that is so far ahead of everyone else in just about every other area. It’s simple. You identify core young players who are low risk from busting after getting paid. Go to them two or three years early, and in exchange for paying them well before the end of their contract, the team saves millions in future salary cap charges. It’s the definition of win-win. There was no excuse why the Patriots didn’t do it with guard Logan Mankins. And it sure looks like the team learned a lesson from that very contentious negotiation, and has made a wise correction.

The Patriots signed 19 free agents in the offseason. There are seven left: TE Visanthe Shiancoe, LB Bobby Carpenter, CB Marquice Cole, TE Daniel Fells, WR Brandon Lloyd, LB Trevor Scott and S Steve Gregory. I think all of them make the roster with Scott the possible lone exception.

AFC East preseason Stock Watch – AFC East Blog – ESPN

Rising 1. Stevan Ridley, Patriots tailback: The starting running back job appears to be locked up for Ridley, who has been the most consistent Patriots tailback in training camp and the preseason. Ridley is running well and put together another solid effort Friday night against Tampa Bay. Ridley rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. These kind of performances is exactly what the Patriots want out of Ridley, who took advantage of his limited opportunities.

My latest Patriots 53-Man Roster (post-75 cut)

My latest Patriots 53-Man Roster (post-75 cut)

With Gaffney and Will Allen both getting released today it opened up some more options for me.

Right now I have all the running backs making it. But at this point if I had to axe one it’d probably be Vereen, and even then we could just IR him.

Ihedigbo might be a reach but I think he’s a great insurance policy and brings good special teams ability.

Really wish I had a better sense of Weems, only having three tackles including Vollmer concerns me.

Looks like Deion Branch is here to stay.

Hope we don’t need the end of game magic this weekend that we needed in this 2009 opener. It was Brady’s greatest comeback of all time, and pretty much the only “Patriots Magic” win of the entire 2009 season.
