Defensive snaps: Jones earns trust – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Linebackers Dont’a Hightower and Brandon Spikes split time in the nickel. Both came off in the dime as Jerod Mayo is the lone all-packages linebacker. … Cornerback Ras-I Dowling was the nickel back, and when he came on to the field, it pushed Kyle Arrington into the slot. … One line of thinking was that maybe Vince Wilfork would see a reduction in snaps with more depth on the line, but that wasn’t the case in the opener. He had a heavy workload. … Jermaine Cunningham saw time at defensive end in the base defense and also as an interior rusher in the dime package, and was productive based on his snaps, also drawing a holding penalty. … The top three safeties – Patrick Chung, Steve Gregory and Tavon Wilson – were part of a rotation.

McDaniels, line were dialed in – Patriots – Boston.com

What people miss about the preseason, especially with line play, is the Patriots don’t do many things as far as protections and schemes. There are a lot of straight dropbacks. The blockers are asked to do a lot of one-on-one blocking, both in the run and pass games. They don’t keep the backs or tight ends in to help. So, yes, if you leave the Patriots’ offensive linemen on an island, they are going to have their struggles at times. Maybe more than their share. But if you construct a plan like offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels did for the Titans, and the Patriots execute like they did, team blocking is going to be in a position to be successful.

It slipped out,” Gronkowski said with a smile. “I wasn’t going to go grab it. I played it off pretty well.

Quite a good win by our players. Those guys did a really good job. We did a good job running the ball offensively, did a decent job stopping the run defensively, made some big plays, turned the ball over and had good field position, so it was a good team win. All three units contributed. We had a lot of guys step up and if we can play that way we will be alright but it was good to see everyone contribute and all the units do a good job for us. It’s nice to get off to a good start but we have got a long way to go.

Massey and Thaler have advice for GMs: only suckers trade up. Over those 14 years of drafts, they calculated the outcomes of every possible 2-for-1 trade for a first rounder using the Draft Value Chart, and found “overwhelming evidence that a team would do better in the draft by trading down.” The team that would […]
