Big weekend for Troy Brown as he’s getting inducted into the Patriots Hall. He doesn’t get enough love on here so let’s do it up with some Troy posts today!

I just think a tight end is involved in a lot of plays. He’s involved in the running game. He’s involved in the passing game because he’s in the middle of the field. He’s involved in pass protection. There’s really no way, there really aren’t hardly any plays where that guy is out of the play. He’s a central guy in pretty much whatever you want to do. And the more versatile he is, the more things he can do, then defensively the harder he is to defend. If you have to defend a guy in the passing game, then that’s an issue. You have to worry about them running behind him, that’s an issue. You have to worry about his speed, that’s an issue. You have to worry about him breaking tackles and catching short passes and turning them into long plays. The more versatile any player is, the more valuable they are. At that position in the middle of the field – with skill players are involved in every play, they give you more options.

NFL odds round-up and best bets

September 12, 2012 by Mike Dussault

As we reset the injuries and rosters from last weekend’s action it’s a good time to take a look at some of the odds around the NFL and make our picks for best bet.

First we must of course start with the Pats who are currently -13.5 against the Cardinals. It’s certainly tempting given how the Pats looked on Sunday and what happened to the Cardinals the last time they came to Foxboro. Call me crazy but take the points with the Cardinals.

The Pats are rarely dominant in home openers and more often than not the games are screwy and not a real indication of the quality of the teams. I still expect the Pats to win, but the Cardinals are somewhat underrated, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

The Pats were shredded by number one receivers in 2011, and Larry Fitzgerald should pose a great challenge no matter who is throwing him the ball. Look for Devin McCourty to seize this chance to make a statement that this year is going to be different for him. Still the Cardinals should be able to keep it under two scores with the quality of their defense.

As for other picks I like I’d put Houston -7 at Jacksonville at the top. It’s time for the Texans to make a statement that they will start convincingly beating teams they should beat. This is what they have to do if they’re going to remain in the AFC elite conversation with New England and Baltimore. I expect Matt Schaub will have a big day.

My upset pick of the week? You might think I’m crazy but I like the Jets +6 over the Steelers and to win outright. Peyton Manning’s arm might not be what it used to be, but he still tore up the Steeler defense and I expect Mark Sanchez can do the same thing with his noodle arm. The Jets should also be able to take advantage of the Steeler offensive line.

Two Patriots worth pointing out

September 12, 2012 by Mike Dussault

I re-watched the Pats-Titans last night and wanted to make sure I mentioned how impressed I was with two guys that have been somewhat overshadowed in the last couple days.

No one, including the pundits, knew who Tavon Wilson was when the Pats drafted him but he could be a real difference maker this year. Yes, we all saw the interception which was a quality grab and no gimme, but his quickness and tackling ability in the middle of the field brought a dimension to the Pats defense that has been missing in recent years.

Pro Football Focus graded him out a solid 1.7, including a 1.5 for pass coverage.

The other guy who was a beast inside was Kyle Love. PFF gave him a 2.1 including a 1.8 for run defense. We all know how valuable Wilfork is to this defense but Love has done nothing but improve the last two years. He was aggressive and decisive.

They were unsung heroes this past weekend, but if they continue these levels of performance they won’t be unsung for very long.

Looking the Patriots and Titans and why running the football still matters… – NFL.com

Looking the Patriots and Titans and why running the football still matters… – NFL.com

Why did the Patriots beat the Titans? A lot of reasons. But a main one was simple and old-school. They ran the ball and stopped the run. Maniacal runner Stevan Ridley gained 125 yards on 21 carries… which a TON of carries for a passing team. Aerial assassin Tom Brady? Well, he threw just 31 passes, which is his sweet spot. Instead of sitting back in nickel or dime and waiting for the Patriots to go at them in the air, the Titans had to defend the run. Or, try to. OC Josh McDaniels kept them guessing, making the Patriots offense nearly impossible to stop.
