[Brady] established a blistering pace early in the game, leaving Denver’s defense looking for answers, while he simultaneously controlled the clock, ensuring the Patriots had the ball for more than 11 of the final 14 minutes of the first half. That kept the Broncos offense cold off the field, which partially accounted for Denver’s inability to heat up until late in the game. And when the Patriots needed the dagger, Brady teamed with Rob Ninkovich, who forced the McGahee fumble, to deliver it.
Patriots’ defense may never be great, but good enough – Patriots – Boston.com
Yup, I’m not sure they’re going to be great this year either. They certainly have the potential up front, but on the back end I’m not sure they do…
Couple notes on their strategy:
So the Patriots dialed up as many blitzes in the first half against Manning (seven) as they did in the previous two games combined. The Patriots scaled back the blitzes in the second half (three) with a big lead, but still ended with 10 against Manning on his 43 dropbacks outside of the 5-yard line. The Patriots blitzed 12 times total in their first four games.
The second key for the Patriots’ defense was to take away the inside throws that Manning loves. The Patriots kept the safeties tight (sometimes too tight as both Patrick Chung and Wilson were beat over the top), dropped the linebackers in Manning’s lanes, and even dropped the occasional defensive end into coverage underneath.
The trickle-down effect from the absence of starting safety Steve Gregory saw rookie Tavon Wilson start in his place. Wilson usually plays a linebacker-type role in the dime package (6 defensive backs), but with him bumped up the depth chart, Ras-I Dowling assumed that role over rookie Nate Ebner. Perhaps this time of thinking might lead the coaching staff to consider Dowling at more of a traditional safety position in the coming weeks.
Once again the new balanced attack from the Patriots paid dividends this week against the Broncos, just as it had against the Bills. There’s no question, the Patriots offensive machine is looking as balanced and dangerous as it’s ever been.
And this is without what many are calling our best weapon on offense? And I mean Aaron Hernandez of course, not Julian Edelman. The addition of an explosive element in their backfield, along with the outside-the-numbers threat in Lloyd, has taken this offense to new heights.
But ultimately just having a hard-to-defend offense isn’t enough to get to the Super Bowl alone. What matters more is that it’s a clutch offense, that is consistent and makes it’s biggest plays in the biggest moments of the game.
How clutch is this ‘12 Pats crew? We still got a way to go.
As for the defense it’s looking more and more like the 2010 version but with a better pass rush. They’re getting turnovers in bunches while the defensive line has been consistently stout in the run game, and porous in the pass game. The pressure has been decent, but notably absent for long stretches in Baltimore.
Nothing about this Broncos game makes you really think anything entirely new about this year’s Pats. They are what they are so far. But if opponents don’t turn the ball over, and get a little pressure on Brady, it starts to get a little dicey.
That said, it’s certainly a roller coaster style of football to watch, which can be fun, but often unnerving, especially at the end ,when the games not in hand and the opponent only needs 80 yards for a touchdown, which usually takes about four plays until they’re in our red zone, anyway…
20 quick hit thoughts about the game:
Excited to plow through this week and get up to Seattle. The week of the yearly pilgrimage is here.
