How Do the Patriots Match Up Against Potential Playoff, Super Bowl Opponents? | Bleacher Report

Up and at ‘em Pats Planet! We start the second half of the season today!

There won’t be much margin for error, Denver will be hot on their tails, and they’ll need to beat the Texans and get help to have any shot at the top seed. For the Second Seed it will take consistent football and they’ll need to really play well at home if they want to be playing at home in the playoffs.

If I had to line up who the Pats most want to see:…

Defensive snapshot via playing time – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Great must-read stuff in here. My favorite nuggets below:

Jones is a leading candidate for defensive rookie of the year honors at this point, according to ESPN.com NFL scout Matt Williamson. … Ninkovich has played mostly end, but moved to linebacker for a short stretch when rookie Dont’a Hightower was out with a hamstring injury. … Nice rebound season from Cunningham, the 2010 second-round pick who has found his niche as an interior rusher in sub packages and backup end.

Spikes’ rise is particularly notable, as he’s strung together games without interruption from injury and/or suspension. He played 40.1 percent of the snaps last season, usually coming off in sub packages. But this year he’s staying on the field in the nickel, as evidenced by his higher total (77.3 percent).

Moore, the team’s primary nickelback since Week 2, was available for any team to claim and no one did. That speaks to how his upside is viewed around the NFL.

Vince Wilfork (437 of 542 snaps) – 80.6 percent

Wilfork is down a tick, from 86.8 percent last season, as the Patriots are finding spots to rest their captain and one of their best defenders.

This is a positive that they’re headed in the right direction, but I’d knock it down even a little farther if it was up to me.

ESPN Boston prognosticates the New England Patriots’ second half – ESPN Boston

ESPN Boston prognosticates the New England Patriots’ second half – ESPN Boston

Will it be as simple as plugging Talib in and expecting improved results? No, the group still has to execute. But schematically, the Patriots can alter their approach on defense with a capable cover corner who can take away an opponent’s top target. That should open the door for more pressure packages from the front seven. This secondary doesn’t have to be elite, and it won’t prevent the team from making a run at the Super Bowl.

Mike, last year you were spot on with Easley. You clearly had a draft crush on him, and I was extremely excited they took him. With the combine going on, who’s your early favorite for the Patriots in round one (assuming they stay at 32). I’m starting to really like SC guard AJ Cann. Seems tough, smart, and a good leader, plus at a position of need. Who you got?

Seems like Cann is where most Patriots fans are starting out with their draft binkies and he makes a lot of sense. I’ve just started to wade into the draft a bit, and yes, guards will be a heavy area of focus, but I think the important thing to remember is that they really shouldn’t […]
