What’s Wrong with Wilfork? | ProFootballFocus.com

What’s Wrong with Wilfork? | ProFootballFocus.com

Interesting breakdown from Steve Palazzolo on Wilfork’s season which we’ve touched on a bit here.

It all comes down to Wilfork playing better when he’s asked to two-gap at the point of attack. He’s able to use his strength to move offensive lineman and he has the awareness to find the ballcarrier. Wilfork is much less effective when he’s forced to shoot the gap in between two linemen. This job is generally reserved for smaller, quicker defensive linemen and it does not mesh well with Wilfork’s talents.

3TFO: Colts @ Patriots, Week 11 | ProFootballFocus.com

On Sunday, we may see a similar one forming between second-year left tackle Anthony Castonzo and rookie defensive end Chandler Jones. Jones announced his presence to the NFL quickly with four pressures and a forced fumble in a Week 1 blowout of the Titans, and he hasn’t slowed down since. He not only leads all AFC rookies with six sacks, but also ranks seventh among all 4-3 DEs with a 11.4 overall grade. The vast majority of his pass rushes have come from the right side, where his 31 total QB pressures are the fifth-most in the league.

I think he can make a significant impact on the outside,” Lombardi said. “This week against the Colts, it’s a little different game because the Colts have a couple of those receivers who have quickness and vertical speed in [Donnie] Avery and T.Y. Hilton so they’re not really the matchup for Talib. But certainly I think he can help on outside. What it will allow the Patriots to do is, if you really break down Patriots tape, the middle of the defense — the ‘backers, the safeties — this is where they’re getting killed more than anything. … Get more speed on the field at linebacker, try to create some more situations where there is more depth in the zone drops, something that didn’t happen last week.

Well that sounds vaguely familiar…

Would you rather have a fully healthy Hernandez, but no Wild Card Week bye, in the playoffs, or a hampered Hernandez in the playoffs with a bye? This is concerning whether it’s a good idea for the Patriots to sit him extra time just to make sure he’s healthy enough for the playoffs, since the AFC East is almost a gimme, but without him we may not be able to push into a playoff bye.

November 16, 2012 by Mike Dussault

Give me the bye week and a hampered Hernandez. The Pats are so banged up they could really benefit from that extra week off over Wild Card weekend.

I think the Patriots road to a bye is going to require they beat the Texans and only lose one more game tops. The Broncos will be nipping at their heels, they must hold them off, and Denver’s schedule is pretty easy.

Patriots Special Teams Report: Week 1 at Arizona Cardinals

The NFL’s continuing its attempt to make kickoffs safer by moving the spot of the ball following a touchback to the 25 yard line is supposed to give teams further incentive to not make any attempt to return kicks and simply take a knee in the end zone. Unfortunately for the league, at least in […]
