Patriots Defensive Drives vs. Dolphins
One of the best performances of the year, if not the best.
Defend middle of the field: Like every other (modified) West Coast Offense nowadays, the Dolphins like to attack the middle of the field. They will use shallow crosses, slants and spot routes to attack in between the hashes and the Patriots must defend this. If they defend it well, there will be opportunities for the Patriots to force turnovers because Tannehill has never been a great passer in between the hashes, sometimes struggling with anticipation. It would not surprise me if the Patriots gave Tannehill false looks in the middle of the field in order to force turnovers.

With both Chandler Jones (ankle) and Jermaine Cunningham (suspension) out, don’t be surprised if the Patriots play a lot of their 3-4 scheme, which is their best run defense. The line would be Vince Wilfork, Kyle Love, and Brandon Deaderick/Ron Brace. The linebackers would be Rob Ninkovich, Brandon Spikes, Jerod Mayo and Dont’a Hightower. Ninkovich and Hightower will need to set a strong edge. The linemen will two-gap and allow Mayo and Spikes to wall up against the run. Love and Deaderick have struggled in recent weeks with gap control.

Given the number of Patriots who are banged up getting the bye is a huge boost to the team. Of course it came at a probably cost of Ninkovich so that is something they’ll have to overcome barring a miraculous recovery. I do think between Trevor Scott, Jermaine Cunningham and Justin Francis they have some […]
