Is Vince Wilfork a Hall of Famer? – WEEI | Christopher Price

Is Vince Wilfork a Hall of Famer? – WEEI | Christopher Price

Great piece from Chris Price, and he really nails it on the head with the quote below.

This is where Wilfork will likely suffer with Hall of Fame voters. The bottom line? The Hall likes big men, but doesn’t necessarily tend to reward big men in the middle who don’t pile up big sack numbers. Those who didn’t watch Wilfork over the course of his career will instead look at his statistical line and see a handful of sacks – he had just the 15th of his career Monday night against Houston – particularly when compared to some of the other defensive tackles of his era. Of course, Wilfork has played the majority of his career in a defense that didn’t call for a penetrating defensive tackle, but that won’t matter to voters who didn’t see him play on a regular basis and only look at his final numbers.

It’s really too bad because anyone who has watched the games know that Wilfork was the single most valuable piece for a team that won more games than anyone else over his career.

how the heck did the 49ers lose to the Rams? The Rams???

December 14, 2012 by Mike Dussault

And tied them! The thing with divisional games is that they’re just about always close. The teams are familiar with each other and have likely spent the majority of their off-season preparing for them. They know they players they’re going against, and know how the opponent will want to play them. This breeds close games.

But with teams who haven’t played in four plus years you can throw most of that out the window. The Patriots can see the 49ers are a physical team but until they see them face to face they won’t know exactly what they’re like.

Just like the 49ers know the Patriots offense can go peddle to the metal, but until they see it in person there’s an element of the unknown, especially when it comes to how the Patriots will specifically attack them which right now is anybody’s guess.

Bruschi’s Breakdown: Patriots will go after Kaepernick’s experience – ESPN Boston

For Justin Smith and Aldon Smith this week, it’s all about the ‘grab.’ When they are on separate ends – Aldon Smith on the left and Justin Smith on the right – there is nothing to worry about there. But when they line up on the same side, that’s when you really have to game-plan for it and get your protection slid that way. Even if you do, Justin Smith does one of the oldest tricks in the book, something we used to do a long time ago. It’s a ‘game’ they run and it’s called a ‘TE’ stunt – the ’T’ is for tackle and the ‘E’ is for end. The ’T’ is the first letter because the tackle goes first, into the ‘B’ gap. And then the ‘E’ is the second letter because the end loops around the tackle. We used to call it a ‘ME’ game, because the defensive tackle would call it, looking to the defensive end while saying ‘me, me, me’ – as in ‘I go first’ into that gap. When that defensive tackle goes into that gap, you want to stay in between that guard and tackle and get penetration so your defensive end can loop around. It sounds simple to block, right? Well, this is what happens. Justin Smith, if he’s on the right side, when he gets into that gap he uses his left arm and gets under the armpit of the offensive guard and he grabs and holds. That stops the offensive lineman from being able to pass the penetrator over to the offensive tackle and switch to the looper. If the tackle has a fist full of jersey or an armpit, or he has the hand hooked, the guard can’t come off, and the end has a clear path to the quarterback. This is something Justin Smith does very well.

How do you think belichick will use gronk when he returns compared to last year, what do you think he learned last year that will help this year

I think the big thing to remember is to win the war, not push it and lose an important piece in a September battle. That said, I’m not sure Belichick is one to tread lightly when players are coming back from injury. If they’re cleared to play they’re going to play as much as they’re […]
