No doubt about it, Patriots the top team in the AFC – Sports – The Boston Globe

No doubt about it, Patriots the top team in the AFC – Sports – The Boston Globe

The Patriots should be able to beat all comers in the AFC. There should be no excuses if the Patriots fail to make the Super Bowl. But if they do fall, it may be because the lack of a bye kept the Patriots from using one of their biggest weapons: the turbo no-huddle attack. We saw it extensively in the Week 5 victory over the Broncos, and then the Patriots kept it tucked away until they got down big and unleashed it against the 49ers last Sunday night. “That was impressive,” said an NFC general manager. “You saw the Broncos game, heard about the Chip Kelly stuff and you knew they had it in their arsenal, but you weren’t really sure if it was fluky or not. “It’s definitely not a fluke. Did you see what it did to the 49ers? They were completely gassed on defense. They had to take [Aldon] Smith, [Ahmad] Brooks, and [Ray] McDonald off the field for rest more than they normally do in a close game. And the 49ers got zero pressure on [Tom] Brady during the comeback. Same thing happened to the Broncos, when they were able to keep Von Miller on the sidelines at times. How are you going to beat Brady without making him feel pressure?”

Inside the matchup: Patriots at Jaguars – Extra Points – Boston.com

Injuries have hurt the Jaguars’ defense, which has talented players but overall has struggled this season. They give up an average of 27.4 points per game, which is fourth worst in the NFL. They’ve struggled defending the run, giving up a league-high 148 yards per game. A big reason for this appears to be the lack of gap discipline with the defenders, particularly on the backside of the formation. The backside contain defenders have been far too undisciplined at times, leaving gaping running lanes, which cost them on a few occasions last week against the Miami Dolphins.

One line of thinking was that the offense was changing to run more through tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez. That sounded good in theory, but injuries thwarted the plan. Gronkowski and Hernandez have only played together, start-to-finish, in three of 15 games this season.

Nice nugget on one of my favorite rookies.

Justin Francis – The rookie free agent defensive lineman out of Rutgers has looked more and more comfortable using his speed, and Bill Belichick has rewarded him with many more snaps in big situations, always a good sign for a player as the team heads into the playoffs. He had four tackles Sunday night. He was in for 22 of 68 snaps. “He’s definitely improved, absolutely,” Belichick said. “I think he’s definitely improved. Last year, he played three-technique at Rutgers, so although he’s played some inside, that’s not really his main thing this year. Our defense is a lot different than what they did there schematically. He’s a competitive player, he works hard. He’s got some good ability and like any young player he’s learning through sometimes trial and error. Sometimes experience, sometimes the hard way. But he works hard to get better and I have a lot of respect for that. There aren’t many people that work harder than he does. He competes every day in practice, both in the classroom and out on the field to learn and improve, and he’s definitely improved a lot, no question.”
