Personnel-wise, the key adjustment was inserting Hoomanawanui into the game for Gronkowski, and surprising Shane Vereen – who had a career day with three touchdowns – at running back for Woodhead. It wasn’t like the Patriots suddenly altered their personnel groupings; of the 59 snaps they ran after Gronkowski’s injury, 50 of them came with Hoomanawanui on the field in place of Gronkowski.

How big of a deal was it that J.J. Watt spit on the Patriots logo? – Not much, as it turns out. The All-Pro defensive end for the Houston Texans was just getting warmed up for the game, not entirely oblivious to where he was spitting, but unaware he was offending anyone. “I do that every game, home or away,” Watt said. "I go out to midfield, I jog out there, spit a little bit, wipe my feet off then go through my stretches. No drama there, that’s 100 percent what I do every game, home or away.” No need to take offense if none was intended.

Great game out of Talib and certainly one that bought him some leverage in contact talks this offseason. He could take another major step if he can shut down Torrey Smith next weekend.
Q: It looked like you matched up Aqib Talib with Andre Johnson. How beneficial is it to be able to match up a corner with a receiver like that?
BB: It was a great battle; it’s two good football players. Johnson is a great receiver. He’s arguably one or two all-time, he’s tremendous. He’s big, fast, has great hands, good route runner. Aqib competed with him every down, just like he did the first half of the first game. That’s two good football players and that’s a battle. We didn’t give him a lot of help. Johnson caught a few but Aqib battled him pretty well there. It was a good matchup.
There hasn’t been a definitive word on Chandler Jones’ ankle injury. However, the positive news is he departed from Gillette Stadium without a walking boot. Jones was limping out of the locker room, and he knew he wasn’t returning to the game in the second half when he hurt the ankle, as he stood off to the side away from the defensive subs. But the boot is always a measure of precaution, and the medical staff didn’t feel it was necessary.
