Mayock echoed what many have said by mentioning the depth at safety, which could allow the Patriots to address that need in later rounds. Specifically, he mentioned Florida State defensive back Xavier Rhodes and Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams as possible fits for New England in the first round.

I think when you start getting down to the late first round, it’s really hard projecting, but you know how Bill works,” he continued. “It’s going to be value, hopefully at a position of need. If not at a position of need and [then it will be] somebody [that] slides through that’s just a great football player, then if not, then we’ve got to trade and get out.

This gives me such mixed emotions. Spent many games on the metal bleachers of the old Sullivan Stadium, but the new Gillette Stadium is light years better.

The Patriots certainly got off to a good start defensively in the AFCCG, and Talib had a nice pass breakup on Anquan Boldin, but I think trying to extrapolate those two possessions to the rest of the game is a little ambitious.
Had the Pats been destroyed on the outside and deep portions of the field I might agree with this argument, but Kyle Arrington, who replaced Talib, actually had one of his best games of the year on the outside.
Torrey Smith and Jacoby Jones were still held in check once Talib was gone and that containment of the deep passing game speaks to the quality of play from free safety Devin McCourty and Arrington/Dennard on the outside.
It was the same problems that killed the Patriots defense all year long, they could not defend the middle of the field with Steve Gregory and their linebackers, and they could not get generate consistent pass rush.
The Ravens dominated post-Talib had a lot more to do with them going non-stop air attack on the middle of the field, than it did exploiting Talib’s replacement.

2002 Denver Broncos at New England Patriots first half (by dipsomaniac1976)
One of the few (or only) times the Patriots wore blue on blue? Love this old flashback games, shows just how far this team has come since BB and TFB took control

WELKER’S ‘LEAP’ LED INTO THIS ABYSS | Boston Herald
I don’t often link to Borges but he can write…
While there is no replacement for Welker on the roster, that won’t matter. Neither will the Patriots’ abysmal record of drafting wideouts. The Patriots are simply not going to put an $11.4 million franchise tag on Welker, someone with intimate knowledge of the team’s thinking said. Nor is he going to get an offer better than the one he turned down in 2011. So all his #leapoffaith got Welker was a decent one-year deal, but he’s got no grounds to complain because the Patriots long ago showed how they do business if you do yours the way he did his, which was to hold out a tin cup and hope they’d drop something in it.
I guess that’s another one of the new traditions in the league. I’ve seen a lot of football games, there has been football for a long time, and there have been captains with no patches and it seemed like everything was fine. I guess that’s another one of our improvements, with the new overtime rules […]
