Any chance the Pats go after Mike Wallace?

February 27, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’ve just never seen it with Mike Wallace. Pittsburgh has a notoriously simple offense, where Wallace would do nothing more than run fast down the field and catch the ball. Things are far from that simple in New England. Receivers need to get to the line, read the defense and determine one of as many as three routes Brady will want them to run.

Instead of spending all that money on another free agent WR who may or may not “get it”, I think the Pats need to go after one in the draft. There should be plenty of them available that fit the mold (like Justin Hunter who I mocked to them in my latest mock draft today). It’s a safer move financially, and it will allow the Pats to develop the receiver from the ground up so to speak.

I don’t want to talk about this on the radio or anywhere else for that matter,” Brady wrote to Dennis. “Athletes are always talking about money at a time when everyone else is struggling so badly to make it. We all make way more than our fair share. And I just think it reflects poorly on myself and my teammates. I really do just want to win, and that has and will continue to be the reason that motivates me and is the biggest factor in my decision-making process.

If the Pats still aren’t able to get a deal done with Welker even after Brady’s extention and all the cap space, how disappointed will you be?

February 27, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Probably not as disappointed as Brady would be. At this point I’d put the odds close to 95% that they get something done with Welker.

Jeff Demps will still be with the pats you made it seem like he’s completely out of the picture

February 27, 2013 by Mike Dussault

Yeah it does sound like Demps would like to do both but I have my doubts if the Pats will be down with that. Training for track and training to play running back in the NFL are two different things. The hope was that by being on IR last season he could regain some bulk to hold up to the pounding. But now if he wants to drop all that and just keep his speed I think it lowers his value. There’s a chance his kickoff return ability is just so outstanding they keep him around, but can you really waste a roster spot on a 4th/5th RB and kick returner, especially when returners have been devalued due to rule changes?

Mike, what’s the rush to trade away Mallett? He’s under contract through 14, and backup QB seems like an important enough position to hold on to the investment — unless a 1st rounder can be had in return.

February 27, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’ve never understood the Mallett buzz because assuming other teams have seen what I’ve seen of him in the preseason, I don’t see how any of them think he’s ready to start in the NFL. I think a lot of it is just the Patriots trying to maneuver to move him, but I just don’t get it. He has a cannon arm, but honestly I thought we saw more out of Brian Hoyer in terms of consistency and pocket presence, and he wasn’t even signed right away as a free agent.

So yeah, I don’t think he’s going anywhere, especially not for anything more than a 4th round pick. You’re right, it makes the most sense to hang on to him. I could see them bringing in another QB this offseason. If Brady is here till 2017 I think the 2015 draft will be the one to watch in terms of trying to find his replacement.
