I don’t usually post pics from Super Bowl losses… the patches alone kick my PTSD in… but I’m making an exception…

The first thing we did was make sure we can try to keep Tom Brady off the field as long as possible. You saw where the time of possession was. We wanted to put together long sustained drives that ended in points. The longer we could keep them off the field, the less opportunity he was going to have to score, which he is eventually going to do as good as he is. The other thing is you can’t give him pre-snap information. And, he is going to look at things. He is going to do everything he can to gather information on what the defense is doing and if you give him the same looks, if he knows it goes. And we moved guys around from where they were, changing linebacker spots, focused on the skies all during the week, and told the guys if you are not lying you are not trying. Everybody had to do it. Nobody could be the tell there. The other thing is, going into the second half, we had a different plan we were going to use. Saying, they’re going to make the adjustment based on what we have done in the first half. Now we have got to bring something out that is different that he hasn’t seen to this point in the game. Let them try to figure that out. Then we can go back to the other stuff that we used initially.

TERRELL SUGGS: ‘I GUARANTEE THE OTHER 31 TEAMS HATE THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS’

29. New England Patriots: Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia. Even if the Pats do re-sign Wes Welker (and Tom Brady’s recent contract re-do certainly has them in line to do just that), there’s a clear need for speed in New England’s offense. Bill Belichick has the tight end position sewn up like no other, and Welker takes care of the slot. But that doesn’t challenge safeties deep, and if there’s one thing Austin can do with his cartoonish speed and agility in space, it’s that. Putting him in this system, with that quarterback, might be almost unfair.

As it stands, the Patriots are planning to go with Devin McCourty and Tavon Wilson as the starting safeties and they have a strong belief in the duo. The team has confidence that Wilson progressed enough last season, and will take the expected leap to Year 2. However, it can’t be discounted that the team really has other plans at safety — league sources believe the Patriots will try for Ed Reed of the Ravens at about $5 million per season.

Clazzy Clare does the Draft: Linebacker

The linebacker class this year is filled with quality, and I think many of us are hoping the Patriots will tap into that resource.  Studying the selection at the combine, one guy really caught my eye but with the way things are transpiring, it would seem less and less likely that the Patriots will get […]
