Wes Welker may have hard time doing significantly better than how New England values him with the receiver market slow right now, according to league sources. The Patriots want to keep slot ace Wes Welker, but given his age, won’t break the bank to do so – especially with Danny Amendola an option in free agency and with their own depth receiver, Julian Edelman, himself a free agent, on the back burner. Some teams are not sure that Welker would be as productive for them as he is in the Pats’ system with Tom Brady, and there has been tredipidation to put forth big money for him.

Good recap of where we’re at with Welker at the moment. Can’t help but assume Welker hasn’t been overwhelmed by his free agency market either, assuming his next step is to take a visit and make sure everyone knows about it. Think that would’ve happened immediately if someone was ready to cough up $8+ million per year. 

Ultimately I think teams are scared to give Welker a big chunk of change. Either way it should all be played out by the end of the week.

I think what has been proven time and time again is that they can afford to lose close to anyone except for No. 12, and that’s a key to this team. That’s no disrespect to Wes, because I love Wes and I love the player. The thing is, they’ve already had contingency plans with Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. They’ve got a plan and an idea in mind if they lose this player – even though those guys aren’t wide receivers, they fill similar roles. It’s not something that they want to do. But again, I also know the Patriots well enough to know that they have a price and they know what they believe it’s going to be, and they’re not going to let other things dictate exactly what they’re going to do.

Thanks for the memories Patchung! This game against Miami in 2010 was probably the highlight of his Patriots career. Unfortunate end for an aggressive safety who just couldn’t stay healthy or excel in coverage.
