Kyle Arrington has re-signed with the Patriots on a four-year deal. This is another move that I was in favor of. I know a lot of Patriots fans aren’t big Arrington fans, but cornerbacks like him, that stay healthy, can play inside or out, and have experience in the system are hard to come by. He should excel if he’s kept inside in the slot, though he actually did a good job in the AFC Championship after Aqib Talib got hurt.

Buh-bye Wes Welker: 10 Reasons New England Patriots Made Right Move

If the reaction of fans is any indication, the cheering masses in New England have lost their way, too. They’ve fallen in love with the fantasy stats. They’ve fallen in love with the glitzy, point-a-minute offenses of recent years and forgotten what it takes to win championships. They’ve forgotten what it was like to watch the hard-nosed, efficient Patriots relentlessly grind opponents into dust and physically beat up the best teams in football; they’ve forgotten what it was like to watch a finely tuned football machine ride guile, balance, guts and toughness all the way to three Super Bowl victories in four years.

I haven’t forgotten, and I certainly miss it.

Are there still 3-4 fronts that utilize “2-gap” concepts? The Patriots at times, and the Steelers in their base front, are 2 teams that come to mind. But in a passing league that places a defensive premium on pressuring the quarterback, the reality is, you have far greater pass rush flexibility and versatility out of 4-3 principles, but with 3-4 personnel. You want more athletic defenders, and you want them aligned in gaps so that they can penetrate more effectively. That’s the key. It’s a tactical combination of personnel and concept.

Cosell’s Take: 3-4 and 4-3 concepts more about personnel than defensive fronts | Shutdown Corner – Yahoo! Sports

Dwight Freeney, John Abraham and Adrian Wilson to visit with Patriots

Dwight Freeney, John Abraham and Adrian Wilson to visit with Patriots

The Patriots are obviously looking to add experience and reliability to what has been a young, inconsistent defense over the past few seasons. The presence of both Abraham and Freeney, who could both be added to the roster and aren’t being played against one another, means they’re also looking to upgrade their pass rush on the edges.

Tom Brady vs. Justin Bieber from Kenny Mayne Bieber acting circles around TFB. Might have to institute a “football clip only” policy on Tommy. (Source: http://www.funnyordie.com/)
