Talib signing for one year and $5 million is further proof that he’s not as good as everyone wants to believe he is. Percy Harvin proved again that if you’re elite, it doesn’t matter how much trouble you are – you’re going to get paid. If Talib was an elite player, he would have received an elite offer – even for one year – and he did not.

Market has gone way down on corners too..

Patriots release Brandon Lloyd.

It’s likely he comes back on a reduced deal, but he was the only legitimate target left who had actually caught a pass from Tom Brady before. Pats are ruthless and fearless.

Report: Aqib Talib signs a one-year deal with Patriots

Report: Aqib Talib signs a one-year deal with Patriots

Good news as the Patriots secondary continues to be addressed in the first week of free agency. With someone like Talib, who brought off-the-field concerns along with injuries, I have no problem that it’s just a one-year deal. But it does make me think cornerback will still be a big target moving forward in free agency and the draft.

One area where Wilson also could add value to the Patriots is in their sub defense as a linebacker. The Patriots have a formidable trio of Jerod Mayo, Brandon Spikes and Dont’a Hightower to serve as linebackers in their base defense, but both Hightower and Spikes showed coverage limitations last season. Wilson has good ball skills and proactive athleticism, and because of his large frame could hold his own in a linebacker alignment. The Patriots have tried something similar with previous free agent signings (John Lynch and Tank Williams are names that come to mind), but the plan has never quite materialized. That could change this season with Wilson, who has the physical skills to take on such a role. Given the increasing reliance by many teams on the passing game, the need for play-in-space linebackers has grown.

The Best of the Week in PatsPropaganda

March 16, 2013 by Mike Dussault

It was an action-packed week as free agency started, Wes Welker departed, and quite a few new guys signed up for a tour of duty in New England.

Overall I like the additions the Patriots have made. They’re going with the “throw it all at the wall” approach at receiver as we expected (and like they did last year), but this time around they’re pursuing younger receivers who aren’t at the end of the line like last year’s crop were.

Most surprising is that Aqib Talib is still available, but the market seems to be shaping up nicely for the Pats retaining him at an affordable rate. Kyle Arrington’s return also helps being back some stability to the secondary despite what some fans might think of him.

Overall it’s been a promising start to free agency that will continue in the coming days and weeks. It was an unfortunate way to start things off with Welker leaving for Denver, but we’re moving on now as the 2013 Patriots start to take shape.
