Still no jersey numbers for new Patriots players (although we hear Danny Amendola, unofficially, could be donning at No. 80 at this time. That could always change).

Notes from Pats’ draft release – New England Patriots Blog – ESPN Boston

Amendola in 80 > Amendola in 16

And let me use this moment to say I’m all for putting all the numbers back into the pool, and just make a ring of honor for the numbers that were previously retired. They can retire 12 when the time’s right. Otherwise let’s bring the rest back.

San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots 2012 – HD YouTube

If you can only enjoy Patriots victories then the Buttfumble game is probably your favorite one of 2012. But if you can handle a loss if it’s a great game then this one might be your favorite. It’s been a long time since there was a more up-and-down emotional roller coaster game for the Pats. Just such a buzz kill with the way they fell short after coming all the way back.

What is the patriots biggest D concern coming into the draft, A/B gap pressure or strengthening the secondary?

April 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

More on this coming next week at B/R, but this is how I look at it. When Mike Mayock asked BB about team-building through the draft and he said it starts “inside out and down the middle”.

It’s my view that the quickest way to make the biggest impact on this defense is to upgrade Kyle Love. It also scares me to imagine what would happen if Vince Wilfork somehow missed a game. They can’t keep running him into the ground.

I’ve kicked the dead horse of improving the interior rush already this season, but simply it comes down to just having another impact player in the front seven and I think Love, though he had solid 2012, is the most upgradeable player on defense.

The only other area I think they strongly look at is Spikes, Hightower and the middle linebacker position. They might need to add another rotational coverage specialist in there. Dane Fletcher might even be the guy.

As long as Dennard isn’t in jail I’m excited about the secondary of him-McCourty-Wilson-Wilson-Gregory-Arrington-Talib. You could use another slot corner in there but that’s a group that you can win a Super Bowl with in my view.

Mike, you’ve got the opportunity to bring back just one of Lloyd/Edelman to add some internal experience to the receiver position next fall. Who do you pick, and why?

April 5, 2013 by Mike Dussault

I’m really kind of surprised that neither has been brought back already. Especially Edelman. And it seemed initially like they’d try to bring Lloyd back at a reduced rate.

But if I had to pick one it would be Edelman. We know what he brings on special teams, and is a top punt returner. As a receiver it seemed like he was really starting to blossom before the injuries. You can ignore the injuries with him, but when you’ve had such limited success developing receivers it seems to me like it should be a no-brainer to keep working with Edelman.

My guess is that he wanted to see what else is out there, maybe if anyone would potentially give him starter money, which it doesn’t look like they will. If it’s a tie between the Pats and Giants, I’d guess he’d pick the Pats.

As for Lloyd, it was a ballsy move to let him go when they had no other legit returning receiver under contract. But if the stories about everyone kind of being fed up with his up-and-down attitude then I get it. There’s a reason he hasn’t been able to stick anywhere and is still on the market despite putting up a respectable year last year.

Ultimately I’d rather see a rookie get a shot at the X receiver spot. Lloyd would never have the physicality or RAC ability the Pats want, and to keep him around would’ve been somewhat of a desperation move and we know the Pats don’t play like that.

Patriots Mini-Camp Day 2 Wrap

Never fun when real work and fake work (i.e. blogging) collide because the one that pays me is going to win out every time, and that ain’t blogging. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t have one eyeball on all things Patriots mini-camp related today. Some points of interest to pass along: It seems like a […]
