WalterFootball.com: 2013 NFL Mock Draft:

April 22, 2013 by Mike Dussault

WalterFootball.com: 2013 NFL Mock Draft:

29: Jamar Taylor, CB, Boise State Aqib Talib re-signed and Adrian Wilson was added, but neither might be around come 2014; Talib inked a 1-year deal, while Wilson will be 34 in October. The Patriots are always looking for secondary depth, and they’ve shown tons of interest in Jamar Taylor throughout this pre-draft process.

59. Markus Wheaton, WR, Oregon State It’s no secret the Patriots need receiving help in the wake of losing both Wes Welker and Brandon Lloyd this offseason. Markus Wheaton fits exactly what Bill Belichick looks for in a receiver, and this is the right draft range for him.

91: Dallas Thomas, G/OT, Tennessee The Patriots are looking for an offensive lineman for depth who could eventually start. Dallas Thomas will be considered because he’s versatile, which is something Bill Belichick loves out of blockers.

The last three years, New England has made 28 draft picks, and 15 of them were college captains – 10 of the last 16 picks made in the last two years. The last three years, Devin McCourty, Brandon Spikes, Stevan Ridley, Ryan Mallett, Dont’a Hightower and Zoltan Mesko were just some of the college captains who were drafted by the Patriots.

29. New England Patriots: This is where Tennessee receiver Cordarrelle Patterson comes off my board. He’s a multi-dimensional weapon that can align anywhere in the formation, including the backfield, which he did at Tennessee. He is dynamic with the ball in his hands: shifty, elusive and explosive. He has open field movement ability that you cannot teach. And remember, he’s 6-foot-2 and 216 pounds. My guess is Bill Belichick will figure out a way to utilize him effectively. But don’t lose sight of the fact that Patterson has much work to do as receiver. At this point, he is not as quick and explosive as a route runner as he is with the ball in his hands. He’s more measured and methodical. He has little sense of the pace and tempo of route running, and how to set up and beat corners. But he has the athletic traits you look for; in addition, he showed good hands, and a willingness to make tough catches in the middle of the field.

I think the draft is a part of the process. Really, the team-building exercise, it kind of never stops. It’s ongoing, it’s just specific to one segment of the year. Most of the time, free agency comes before the draft. We had one instance where it didn’t. The team-building process is nonstop, it’s ongoing, and once we get post-draft, there will be a period during training camp – like Rob Ninkovich, just to pick a name, I think we signed him in August 2009 in training camp. And Rob has ended up being one of the better players that we’ve had in our program. It’s constant, it’s going, it really never stops, and in the end, the most important thing is to do whatever we can to help our team win games.

The chance to pair Wilfork with a similar attacker would instantly improve the Pats’ front. At 31, it’s hardly unrealistic to wonder how much longer Wilfork can play at an elite level. A violent defensive pairing would be helpful, but the opportunity to use more of a rotation, limit Wilfork’s reps to save his long-term endurance and, ideally, not suffer too much of a drop-off would be a luxury.

29. New England Patriots – Robert Woods, WR, USC
The Patriots draft situation is more fluid than ever. They could go in about three different directions depending on how the draft board shakes out. What I do know is that they are focused on four areas CB, WR, DL and OG. Depending on how the picks before them go, it’s likely they go wide receiver or cornerback with their first pick. Over the last three months the Patriots have spent a lot of time and resources scouting the receiver class. Out of all the receivers that could be picked with this selection, I believe Woods is the best fit. His ability to run a number of different routes, line up anywhere in the formation and his strong hands make him a great fit for the Patriots offense. Woods will give OC Josh McDaniels a lot of flexibility with formations and how he is lined up. If it weren’t for his ankle injury Woods would be ranked much higher. If Woods is off the board, I expect the Patriots to target a CB and reset their WR board heading into the second round. Cornerbacks to keep an eye on are Jamar Taylor, Blidi Wreh-Wilson and potentially Desmond Trufant.
